This study attempts to discover the missiological themes revealed in the Gospel of John. This study tries to apply missiological insights discovered in the Gospel of John to modern missions and mission studies. The Gospel of John includes some significant missiological themes and insights. First, the Gospel of John shows that God loves the world so much, as He sent His only Son to the world to save it (3:16-17). Further, the Gospel of John asserts that there is eternal life only in Jesus Christ (14:6). The Father’s will is eternal life given to those who believe in His son (6:40). The purpose of missions is to give eternal life to the people whoever believe in Him as their Savior and Lord (20:21). Second, the Gospel of John demonstrates that the Word came into the world as a human to fulfill God’s salvific purpose (1:14; 5:24; I Jn 4:2). He humbly served the people and told them to be born again of the water and spirit (3:5) and gave them eternal life(Phil. 2:6-8). Finally, He died on the cross to save them. He proved that He truly loves them through His death (7:33-34; 12;23-24; 14:19; 17:1, 4; 19:20; Phil. 2:8). His service is a perfect model of incarnational missions. Third, the Gospel of John affirms that the Triune God is involved in mission. God the Father sent His only Son and the Holy Spirit to the world (1:1-5; 3:16; 8:42; 14:16; 15:26; 16:28; 20:21). Jesus Christ also sent the Holy Spirit to the world (15:26; 16:7) and His disciples (17:18; 20:21). The disciples fully received the Holy Spirit, which empowered them to go into the world. Fourth, the Gospel of John explains that the Word is universal for all kinds of people. Jesus Christ was sent not only to the Jews, but also to the Gentiles. Whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life (3:16). His sacrificial death provides atonement for all people's sins (12:24; 14:3; 16:20; 17:1, 4; 19:30). John 10:16 makes it clear that the Gospel of John seeks universal salvation, that is, salvation for all mankind. The “other sheep” needs to be included in His fold. Fifth, the Gospel of John claims that the Holy Spirit was sent to the world through God the Father and His son Jesus Christ (14:16; 26; 15:26; 16:7; 20:22). The Holy Spirit is with the believers (14:16), teaches them (14:26), reminds them of what He told them (14:26), and convicts them about sin, righteousness, and judgement (16:8). The Holy Spirit gives witnesses to the Word (15:26), and helps the believers forgive sins (20:23). The disciples need to receive the Holy Spirit before they are sent to the world (20:22). Sixth, the Gospel of John tells that God the Father and His son are essentially one as the doctrine of the Trinity teaches. The Triune God works together in terms of creation, salvation, sanctification, and glorification. The Gospel of John teaches the believers a new commandment: love one another (13:34). World missions depend upon the Great Commission (20:21) and the Great Commandment (13:34). The Body of Jesus Christ builds up each other when they are experiencing cultural diversity. In this context, the Gospel of John is a book of missions. The Gospel of John testifies about the mission of the Triune God. Further, it talks about the mission of the disciples as well as the missions of the community of faith. The Gospel of John reveals God’s will for the salvation of the world. His will is universal for salvation regardless of race, color, sex, age, and culture. God will be glorified when salvation will be completed universally through the church.
