The works of Orlan, a french woman artist who actively participated in criticism on any argument over body give us a formulated criticism against somewhat standardized criteria of aesthetics under the pressure over body throughout our history, and a series of new aesthetic concepts as well.
With her works such as ‘a performance of plastic surgery’ and ‘Self-Hybrida- tion’, she tried to newly recognize our body and physical members as a symbol that stands for authentic criticism and culture against conventional aesthetics as defined in former patriarchal society.
So this study will look through Orlan"s critical recognition about ‘cosmetic sur- gery" along with her own arguments to reveal through her works, as well as a variety of conventional discussions over beauty. In addition, it will consider the meaning of ‘beauty make-up’ that becomes highlighted in terms of its creativity and aesthetic reflection.
Cosmetic surgery that considers our skin as an object to decorate or ornament needs a sort of self-reflection about extreme aestheticism.
Other than common cosmetic make-up, cosmetic surgery is an abstract concept in terms of its cultural nature.
The ‘make-up’ is an everlasting invention that sometimes hides and sometimes reveals the advantage or disadvantage of our face depending on the rhythm of our own desire, while ‘cosmetic surgery’ means an isolated world that shows only its critical results.
As a matter of fact, nobody can be free from influences of physical attraction. So called ‘physical attraction’ is usually defined and determined by any social consent and reflects the values of the society.
Our cognition about physical attraction plays an essential role in building up our own self or ego, which has strong influences on different human relationships.
The images of beauty contain raveled riddles like ancient pictograph. That is why the beauty may be reproduced for ever, which goes on the way to present any good answer ceaselessly.
We invest various colors into our own natural and better self than ever for the sake of a little better life, rather than better ideas.
