The purpose of this study was to examine the usefulness of peer assessment for developing pre-service teachers’ competence in student assessment. The participants were 20 college students who enrolled in a multimedia-assisted language teaching course, and they were asked to assess peers’ multimedia-assisted English language teaching materials. The analyses of peer assessment results revealed that the participants’ ratings were reliable. The results of generalizability study showed that the students experienced more difficulties rating the content than the design of the materials. The analyses of the degree of agreement in judgement between peer and teacher ratings indicated that the student raters provided lower scores for high-level students and higher scores for low-level students than the instructor. However, the correlations between the teacher assessment and the peer assessment were high. Finally, the students reported that peer assessment was generally a useful exercise. The implications of the findings are discussed.
