국문 초록

During the past 20 years, the number of film majors in Korean colleges and universities has increased dramatically. Most of those 136 colleges and universities that has film major in their undergraduate program have so called ‘film workshop’or programs in which students make their own films. The amount of films made through these kinds of film school program must be enormous, and some kinds of regulations and guide lines should be made to control and to direct the right ways. Because these filmmaking students are mostly amateur and don’t have enough experience, mistakes are inevitable. Although professors try to take care the students, the actual shooting usually takes place outside of school, so the students can and must do their own ways. One of the facts that we have to think about is the funding. In short filmmaking project, it is hard to find the investor or sponsor because in short films there usually no attractive commercial point. Students make the money by themselves during summer vacation, or some simply get from their parents. Although it is a short film, the total amount to make a less than 20 minutes short could go 20,000,000 won. That was absolutely big enough to take care of by one person. A government support through various kinds of ways is necessary. Another point we should concern is the attitude of post production labs that students must use to complete their films. When students want their negative films to be cut and when they need optical record and print, they have to use post production labs. However the labs don’t seem to welcome these students customer because the student films are not very profitable comparing feature length commercially made films. So commercial films are treated their main customers, and students films are sometimes literally abandoned. They don’t want to care about these low cost earning but demanding a lot films. But the lab people should think about that the students he just ignored soon become his precious customers. I strongly ask lab technicians ways of thinking against their student customers. Funding and post production labs are just some of the problems that Korean film students have in their filmmaking process. Korea Film Promotion Commission and the government should think about additional support toward these film schools in the age of Han-ryu.
