Background Recent clinical studies have revealed the advantages of exercise using one’s body weight. Although there are two representative hip extension exercises, prone leg raise (PLR) and Nordic hip extension (NHE), there is a lack of studies directly comparing the two exercises by measuring muscular activity and subjective difficulty Objectives To identify how the variation in the exercise affects extensors of trunk and lower extremity activity, this study investigated changes in neuromuscular activation during exercises. Further, we explored whether the angle of exercise affects muscle activation and subjective difficulty. Methods Twenty asymptomatic male participants were included. Two types of hip extension exercise, PLR and NHE, and two exercise angles (10 & 20°) were administered, thereby comparing four exercise conditions. Surface electromyography and subjective difficulty data were collected. Results The erector spine (ES) and gluteus maximus (GM) activity was significantly greater with the PLR exercises compared with the NHE exercise (p < 0.05). The ratio between the biceps femoris (BF) and the GM was also significantly greater with the PLR (p < 0.05). The angular difference affects the activities of the BF. Dominance of ES and GM activations were significantly greater with the PLR, and that of BF was significantly greater with the NHE (p < 0.05). Conclusions Relatively higher inclination angle was not effective in overall muscular activation except the BF; however, different type hip extension exercises could selectively activate the trunk muscles and lower extremity muscles. The PLR exercises could be good options for stimulating the ES and GM, while the NHE exercise could minimize the ES activity and activate the BF muscles.
