학교 밖 청소년의 성인기 이행 과정에서 경험하는 취약성과 학교 중단 의미 변화에 대한 종단적 탐색 : 20대 중후반 청년들을 중심으로

국문 초록

이 연구는 학교를 중단한 후 10여 년이 지난 20대 중후반 청소년들이 성인기 이행과정에서 경험하는 취약성과 학교 중단의 의미 변화를 종단적으로 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2018년부터 2023년까지 학교 밖 청소년실태조사에 참여해 온 10명의 면접 자료에 대한 질적 분석을 시도하였다. 연구 결과, 이들은 진학, 진로, 구직 과정에서 취약성을 경험하였다. 우선, 구직 과정에서 학교 중단 이력이 주는 불리함, 대학 진학시 정보 부족, 안정적 진로 설정과정에서 경쟁력 취약 등을 경험하였다. 그리고 사회 문화적 측면에서도 취약성을 경험하였다. 학창시절 친구관계 부재로 인한 좁은 인간관계, 학생 문화 부재로 인한 소외감 경험, 사회에서는 주변의 부정적 인식에 대한 해명 과정에서 피로감과 좌절을 느끼며, 실패자나 낙오자로 낙인찍히지 않기 위해 더 많은 노력을 해야 한다는 부담감을 갖고 있었다. 10여년 이상 장기적 삶의 궤적에서 학교중단 관련 의미는 고정된 것이 아니라 시간의 흐름이나 주변 상황, 개인의 신상 변화, 진로 설계 과정 등에서 긍정적 평가와 부정적 평가 사이에서 유동적으로 나타나거나 양가적 감정을 드러내는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 종단적 탐색이 제시하는 시사점으로 학교 밖 청소년에 대한 권리 기반 접근과 취약성을 극복하고 긍정적 성장을 보이는 사례들을 통한 지원방안 모색이 논의되어야 함을 제안하였다. This study aimed to longitudinally analyze the vulnerabilities experienced and the changing meanings of school dropout for young adults in their mid-to-late twenties, who left school over a decade ago. For this purpose, a qualitative analysis was conducted on the interview data of 10 participants from the Out-of-School Youth Survey conducted between 2018 and 2023. The study results indicated that these individuals experienced vulnerabilities with continuing education, career planning, and job seeking. Specifically, they faced disadvantages during job searches due to dropping out of school, lacked information when applying to universities, and found it difficult to compete while trying to establish a stable career path. They also faced disadvantages in socio-cultural aspects. For example, they had few social connections because they lacked friendships during their school years, felt isolated due to the absence of a student culture, and felt tired and frustration from explaining themselves to society's negative perceptions. They also felt the burden of having to make extra effort to avoid being labeled as failures or dropouts. At different times, for more than a decade of their lives, the meaning of school dropout fluctuated between positive and negative evaluations depending on various circumstances, including personal changes and career planning processes. This exploration suggests the importance of a rights-based approach to out-of-school youth, as well as the need to explore support strategies that can help overcome vulnerabilities and foster positive growth, based on successful cases.
