국문 초록

본 연구는 한국불교의 대표적 선지식 서옹(1912–2003)과 가톨릭 사제이자 생태철학자 토마스 베리(1914–2009)의 문명론을 비교하여 현대문명 비판과 대안 문명론에 대한 동서양 사상가의 차이와 공통점을 고찰한다. 두 사상가는 인류가 직면한 물질만능주의, 과학기술 중심주의, 생태계파괴, 인간성 상실 등의 위기를 심층적으로 성찰하며 종교적 지혜를 통해문명 전환의 길을 모색했다는 접점이 있다. 서옹은 선 수행과 ‘참사람’ 사상을 중심으로 물질문명 속에서 상실된 주체성을 회복하고 개인의 자각을 공동체적 실천으로 확장하는 ‘참사람 결사 운동’을 제창하였다. 베리는 테야르 드 샤르댕의 진화론적 우주관과 동양 철학에 기반하여, 근대 서구문명의 ‘진보의 신화’와 ‘인간중심주의’를 비판하고 ‘위대한 과업’으로서 생태대로의 이행을 주장하였다. 그러나 역사 이해에 있어서는 분명한 차이가 존재한다. 베리는 기독교 신학과 진화론적 우주론에 근거하여 역사를 목적론적ㆍ낙관적으로 해석한다. 이에 반해 서옹은 불교의 연기론에 입각해 절대적목적을 부여하지 않고 낙관주의를 경계하면서 ‘지금 여기’에서의 수행과 실천을 강조한다. 이러한 차이에도 불구하고, 두 사상가는 모두 욕망의 무제한적 팽창과 영성의 상실을 위기의 근원으로 진단한다. 그리고 인간 내면의 변화를 출발점으로 강조하고 존재를 상호의존적 관계망 속에서 이해하며 개인적 자각이 공동체적 실천으로 나아가야 한다는 점을 공유한다. 따라서 본 연구는 두 사상가의 비교를 통해 현대문명 위기 속에서 동서양 사상이 어떻게 교차하고 보완될 수 있는지를 밝히며, 종교적 성찰이 문명 전환 담론에 기여할 가능성을 모색한다.

영문 초록

This study compares the civilizational perspectives of Seoong( 西翁, 1912–2003), a representative figure of modern Korean Buddhism, and Thomas Berry(1914–2009), a Catholic priest and ecological philosopher, in order to examine both the commonalities and differences between Eastern and Western thinkers in their critique of modern civilization and their visions of alternative civilization. Both thinkers shared a deep concern for the crises of materialism, technocentrism, ecological destruction, and the loss of human dignity, and sought pathways toward civilizational transformation through religious and philosophical wisdom. Seo-ong emphasized Zen practice and the idea of the “True Person” (Cham-saram), advocating the True Person Movement as a way to restore lost subjectivity within material civilization and to extend individual awakening into communal practice. Berry, drawing on Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s evolutionary cosmology and Eastern thought, criticized the “myth of progress” and anthropocentrism in modern Western civilization, and proposed the advent of the “Ecozoic Era” as humanity’s “Great Work.” Despite these shared concerns, a significant difference arises in their historical perspectives. Berry, grounded in Christian theology and an evolutionary cosmology, interpreted history in a teleological and optimistic manner, presenting a vision of humanity’s progression toward a new civilization. In contrast, Seo-ong, rooted in the Buddhist principle of dependent origination (pratītyasamutpāda), refrained from assigning absolute purpose, remained cautious toward eschatological or overly optimistic perspectives, and emphasized practice and communal action in the “here and now.” Despite these differences, both thinkers converge in diagnosing the boundless expansion of desire and the loss of spirituality as the root causes of the crisis, and in underscoring inner transformation as the starting point for alternatives. They also share a relational worldview in which existence is understood as an interdependent web, and in which individual awakening must lead to communal practice. By comparing Seo-ong and Berry, this study highlights how Eastern and Western thought can intersect and complement each other in the face of civilizational crisis, and explores the potential contribution of religious reflection to discourses on civilizational transformation.
