국문 초록

고구려의 초피(貂皮) 획득은 그간 삼림·유목 세력으로부터 확보해 중원왕조에 공급한 중개무역의 관점에서 이해되어 왔다. 그러나 담비 서식지 추정 결과, 백두산과 함경도 등 고구려 영역에도 담비가 서식했음을 확인할 수 있다. 즉, 고구려는 삼림·유목 세력과의 교역 외에도 공납의 수취 등 자국 내에서 자체적으로 초피를 획득한 것이다. 초피 수취 경로는 국내성 시기에는 백두산-함경도 일대를 경유하는 ‘동해로(東海路)’, ‘옥저방면로(沃沮方面路)’, ‘동옥저(東沃沮) 방면 교통로’ 등 복수의 경로가 활용되었고, 평양 시기에는 두만강 하구에서 동해 해안로를 따라 덕원-마식령을 거쳐 평양으로 연결되는 길이 상정된다. 삼림·유목 세력과의 교역은 철을 매개로 이루어졌으며, 국가 주도의 대규모 상단으로 조직되었다. 교역은 송화강(松花江)·눈강(嫩江)·목단강(牡丹江) 수로를 주로 이용했으며 계절적 요인으로 인해 1년 주기로 진행된 것으로 보인다. 초피 관련 기록은 남조 자료에만 나타나는데, 이는 화북을 상실한 남조 국가가 권위와 정체성을 보완하기 위해 초피를 필요로 했기 때문이다. 고구려는 이를 이용해 남조와의 우호 관계를 유지하고 정보를 수집하는 동시에, 비단·서적 등 필요한 물자를 확보하고, 나아가 동남아시아·인도·서역과의 간접 교류를 통해 경제적 이익과 국제적 위상 제고를 도모하였다.

영문 초록

The acquisition of sable fur (貂皮) by Goguryeo has traditionally been interpreted from the perspective of intermediary trade, in which furs were procured from forest and nomadic groups and supplied to the Chinese dynasties. However, ecological reconstruction indicates that sable habitats also existed within Goguryeo’s own territory, including the Baekdu Mountain and Hamgyeong regions. This suggests that, in addition to exchanges with forest and nomadic groups, Goguryeo obtained sable fur domestically through tribute collection. During the Gungnae Fortress period, multiple transportation routes were utilized, such as the “East Sea Route,” “the route toward Okjeo,” and the “Eastern Okjeo Route” through the Baekdu-Hamgyeong area. In the Pyongyang period, a route is presumed to have extended from the Tumen estuary along the East Sea coast via Deokwon and Masikryeong to Pyongyang. Trade with forest and nomadic groups was mediated by iron and organized as large-scale, state-controlled caravans. These exchanges primarily employed the Songhua, Nen, and Mudan river systems and were conducted on an annual cycle due to seasonal constraints. Records concerning sable fur appear only in the sources of the Southern Dynasties, reflecting their need for sable to reinforce political authority and cultural identity after the loss of North China. Goguryeo exploited this demand to maintain diplomatic relations with the Southern Dynasties, to secure essential goods such as silk and books, and to collect intelligence. Furthermore, it leveraged indirect exchanges with Southeast Asia, India, and the Western Regions, thereby gaining economic benefits and enhancing its international standing.
