국문 초록

포항 칠포리 암각화군은 인접 유적 간의 공간적 상관관계를 통해 볼 때, 흥해분지의 곡강천유역을 생활 기반으로 하는 지석묘사회에 의해 조영된 것으로 보인다. 이들은 공동체의 정체성을 상징하는 암각화를 영역 경계에 배치하여 영속적인 토지 점유권을 주장하는 표시자로 삼고 있었다. 이러한 토지 점유 공간에서 반복적으로 이루어진 암각 행위는 권력, 차별화, 분리 등과 같은 장소성을 형성하며 지역사회를 유지·강화하는 역할을 하고 있었다고 생각된다. 칠포리 암각화군의 장소성은 일차적으로 생활공간과 분리된 차별적 장소선택을 통해 형성되었다. 암각화군은 생활공간과 시선이 차단되어 있는데, 이것은 암각화군이 일상생활과 분리된 차별적 공간임을 강조하여 신성성을 부각시키는 요인으로 작용하였을 것이다. 이러한 폐쇄성은 암각 행위자들에게 특별한 접근 권한을 부여하는 것이었고, 암각 의례공간의 운영과 이념의 조작은 그들의 정치권력을 확대하는 배경이 되었다고 본다. 이러한 신성성과 정치권력의 상징하는 장소성은 암각화군에 도달하는 과정에서 보다 극대화되었을 것이다. 암각화군은 고갯마루 너머에 위치한다. 이곳을 오르는 힘겨운 시간은 신성한 장소로 들어가기 위한 통과의례였을 것이고, 도중에 마주하는 경관은 암각 행위와 관련한 기억들을 상기시키며 복합적인 의미와 장소성을 재창출하는 역할을 하였을 것이다. 이와 더불어, 광천유역권에 중첩된 암각화 자체의 가시권은 경쟁 공동체가 암각화를 상시 체험할 수 있도록 강제하고, 이를 매개로 토지소유권과 불가침을 강조하는 의미를 담고 있었다고 생각된다. 이처럼 칠포리암각화군은 특별한 경관을 구성하며 단위공동체의 토지점유권을 주장하고 공동체성을 강화하는 의례중심지로서 기능하고 있었다. 이는 공동체 내의 사회적 의사소통과 삶의 방식에 영향을 미치는 중요 요인이자, 경제 활동과 사회 질서를 안정적으로 유지하는 수단으로 작용하고 있었다. 이러한 의례경관의 반복적이고 주기적인 체험, 그리고 기억과 전승은 개인적·집단적 차원에서 고유의 장소성을 형성하며 공동체의 정체성을 유지·강화하는 역할을 하고 있었던 것이다.

영문 초록

The Chilpo-ri Petroglyphs in Pohang, when analyzed through its spatial relationships with adjacent archaeological sites, appears to have been created by a dolmen society based in the Gokgangcheon River basin. This society likely placed petroglyphs, symbolizing communal identity, at territorial boundaries to assert land ownership. The repeated act of rock carving in these land-occupation spaces shaped a sense of place characterized by power, differentiation, and separation, serving to maintain and strengthen the local community. The placeness of the Chilpori Petroglyphs was primarily formed through the deliberate selection of a distinct location separated from living spaces. The petroglyphs are visually isolated from residential areas, emphasizing their role as a sacred, differentiated space. This seclusion likely highlighted the sanctity of the site, granting special access privileges to those performing the rock-carving rituals. The operation of this ritual space and the manipulation of its associated ideologies likely provided a foundation for expanding the political power of the ritual practitioners. This sanctity and political symbolism were likely amplified during the movement to reach the petroglyphs. Located beyond a ridge, the arduous ascent to the site may have served as a rite of passage into a sacred space. The landscape encountered along the way likely evoked memories associated with the rock-carving rituals, recreating complex meanings and reinforcing the placeness. Furthermore, the visibility of the petroglyphs within the Gwangcheon River basin ensured that competing communities could constantly experience their presence, emphasizing claims of land ownership and inviolability through this medium. Thus, the Chilpori Petroglyphs functioned as a ritual center, constituting a distinctive landscape that asserted the land ownership of the community while reinforcing its collective identity. This served as a critical factor influencing social communication and lifestyles within the community, acting as a means to stabilize economic activities and social order. The repetitive and cyclical experience of this ritual landscape, along with the memories and traditions it fostered, shaped a unique sense of place at both individual and collective levels, playing a vital role in maintaining and strengthening the community’s identity.
