할리끄 아흐마드 니자미가 저술한 『타리크-이-마샤이흐-이-치스트』는 인도 수피즘, 특히 치스티 전통 연구에 있어 기념비적인 공헌으로 평가받는다. 본 논문은 이 저작에 대한 주제적 연구를 통해, 인도-이슬람 사회의 역사가로서 니자미가 치스티 실실라(silsila: 영적 계보)의 영적·사회적·정치적 차원을 어떻게 해석하는지를 살펴본다. 니자미는 성인전적 낭만주의에서 벗어나, 수피 성인들의 실제 삶의 경험, 사회와의 상호작용, 정치 권력과의 복잡한 관계를 조명하는 정교한 역사적 접근 방식을 취한다. 이 논문은 치스티 정신의 핵심인 파끄르(faqr: 영적 빈곤), 키드맡(khidmat: 봉사), 사마(sama‘: 영적 청취), 성인들의 사회개혁가 및 도덕적 본보기로서의 역할, 제국 후원에서의 의도적 거리두기 등의 주요 주제를 비판적으로 고찰한다. 니자미의 저작은 보다 넓은 수피 사학 전통 안에 위치하면서도, 남아시아에서의 타사우우프(Tasawwuf: 수피즘)에 대한 학문적 연구의 전환점으로 평가된다. 본 논문은 『타리크-이-마샤이흐-이-치스트』가 치스티 계보의 역사적 발전을 기록하는 데 그치지 않고, 중세 인도 사회의 도덕적·영적 구조를 재구성하려는 니자미의 사학적 신념을 반영하고 있다고 주장한다. 이러한 주제적 독해를 통해, 니자미가 수피즘 연구와 인도 이슬람 지성사 모두에 기여한 독자적인 의의를 조명한다.

영문 초록

Tarīkh-i-Mashāyikh-i-Chisht, authored by Khaliq Ahmad Nizami, stands as a seminal contribution to the study of Indian Sufism, particularly the Chishti tradition. This paper offers a thematic study of the text, exploring how Nizami, as a historian of Indo-Islamic society, interprets the spiritual, social, and political dimensions of the Chishti silsila. Departing from hagiographical romanticism, Nizami employs a nuanced historical method that foregrounds the lived experiences of Sufi saints, their engagement with society, and their complex relationship with political authority. The study critically examines key themes such as the Chishti ethos of faqr (spiritual poverty), khidmat (service), and sama‘ (spiritual audition); the saints’ roles as social reformers and moral exemplars; and their conscious detachment from imperial patronage. Nizami’s work is contextualized within the broader tradition of Sufi historiography, while also being positioned as a pivotal moment in the academic study of Tasawwuf in South Asia. This paper argues that Tarīkh-i-Mashāyikh-i-Chisht not only documents the historical development of the Chishti order but also reflects Nizami’s larger historiographical commitment to reconstructing the moral and spiritual fabric of medieval Indian society. Through this thematic reading, the study highlights Nizami’s distinctive contribution to both Sufi studies and the intellectual history of Islam in India.
