국문 초록

이기백은 ｢한국사회발전사론｣(1977)에서 한국의 사회발전 양상 파악을 강조하였다. 이후 1983년에 그는 더욱이 ‘전시대에 걸친 민족의 내재적 발전론’ 을 제기하였는데, 그 자신이 共編者 중 하나로 역사란 무엇인가를 엮으면서포함한 맨덜봄의 논문을 통해 서양사학사의 지식을 섭취함으로써 그는 특히어느 문명이든 그러하듯이 한국 민족 역시 내재적 발전이 전개되는 역사를 지니고 있음을 강조하였던 것 같다. 아울러 비코의 견해에서 극명하게 드러난바대로 세계의 각 민족이 제각각 독자적으로 발전해 나간 것과 마찬가지로 한국 민족 역시 그랬다고 생각한 것으로 여겨진다. 그리고 그는 ｢한국사의 전개｣(2002)에서는 지배세력의 바로 밑 계층이 새로운 지배세력으로 등장하곤 하여 점점 지배세력의 사회적 기반이 확대되어 가는 결과를 가져왔다고 보았다. 그는 여기에서 진일보하여 각 시기마다 일직선적으로 역사가 발전해온 것이 아니라, 계단식으로 몇 개의 도약기를 거치며전개되어 온 것이며, 그 각 단계마다 또 중요한 의미를 갖는다고 술회하였다. 이러한 ｢한국사회발전사론｣ 및 ｢한국사의 전개｣ 서술 내용의 가장 큰 특징은 ‘지배세력’을 중시하고, ‘민중’을 배제한 점이다. 특히 후자의 경우, 이는 그무렵 학계 일각에서 주장하는 소위 민중사학론에 대한 일련의 비판이 집중적으로 제기되고 있었던 상황과 깊은 연관이 있었다. 그 자신 역시 민중사학론에 대해서 마르크스의 유물사관 공식에 입각하고 있다는 점에서 매우 비판적이었기 때문이기도 하였다. 그리고 ｢한국사의 전개｣ 서술 내용 또 하나의 특징은 신민족주의사관에 입각한 정리에 있다. 한국사의 발전에 주도적으로 참여한 인간집단의 변화에 기준을 두고 그가 이렇게 신민족주의사관을 구체적으로 표방한 것은 처음이었다. 따라서 그가 신민족주의 사관을 분명하게 밝히고 그런 견지에서 한국사의 전개에 대해 이렇게 서술한 것 자체가, 그 자신이 신민족주의사관을 표방한 대표적인 학자로 규정하였던 孫晋泰의 영향을 받은 것이어서 사학사적으로도 의미가 적지 않다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

Lee Ki-bak emphasized understanding Korea's social development patterns in “the Discussion of Korean social development history” (1977). Later, in 1983, he further proposed “the theory of the intrinsic development of the nation throughout the past,” which he himself included in the What is History as one of his co-editors by acquiring knowledge of Western history through Mandelbaum's thesis, which he seems to have emphasized that the Korean people have a history of intrinsic development, especially in any civilization. In addition, as clearly revealed in Vico's view, it is believed that the Korean people also thought that just as each nation in the world developed independently, the Korean people also did. In “the Unfolding of Korean History” (2002), he saw that the social foundation of the ruling power was gradually expanded as the lower class of the ruling power used to appear as a new ruling power. He went further here and stated that history has not developed in a straight line at each period, but has been developed through several leaps in a stepwise manner, and each step has an important meaning. The biggest feature of the descriptions of “the Discussion of Korean social development history” and “the Unfolding of Korean history” is that they value “dominant power” and exclude “people.” In particular, in the latter case, this was closely related to the situation in which a series of criticisms about the so-called theory of people's history, which some of the academic circles argued at that time, were being intensively raised. It was also because he himself was very critical of the theory of people's history in that it was based on the Marx's theory of historical materialism. Another characteristic of the description of “the Unfolding of Korean history” is the arrangement based on the view of new people's nationalism. It was the first time that he specifically advocated the view of new people's nationalism based on the standard of change in the human group that took the lead in the development of Korean history. Therefore, his clarification of the view of new people's nationalism and his description of the development of Korean history from that point of view was influenced by Son Jin-tae, who himself defined the view of new people's nationalism as a representative scholar.
