The movie “Forbidden Dream” tells the story of two Joseon men who had dreams while watching the sky. They were geniuses. One man was King Sejong the Great, who dreamed of something unique to Joseon, and the other man was Jang Young-shil, a genius scientist from the lowly. King Sejong, the greatest in history, wanted to build a people-based independent Joseon by opening up the skies of Joseon and creating an astronomical farming season suitable for Joseon. Jang Young-shil, a genius scientist who was born at lowest level, fulfilled Sejong's dream and became the 3rd highest hierarchy in the end. Although they shared their dreams for 20 years and achieved great works, there was no end of their relationship in historical records. Therefore, “Forbidden Dream” is a faction film that reveals their hidden stories. “Forbidden Dream” is a film set in the palace. The palace was king’s ruling place in public and the residence privately. In the movie “Forbidden Dream,” I would like to take a look at the tea life in the court. The court set up a government office called a Tea-Room (tea preparation house) to supply tea which dedicated to ceremonial tea days at various events in the court. There was also a member of organization (Dagunsa) who carried tea utensils and luggage to prepare and offer the tea for the royal family outside the court. Court ceremonies included Jeobbin ceremonies for guests such as ambassadors, envoys, and royal relatives; Jinyeon ceremonies for royal happy, pleasant events; Jehyang ceremonies for memorial sevices, sacrificial rites; Hoigang ceremonies for prince’s group study with master and high ranking officials. It can be seen from literature that tea was used in such a variety of rituals. In addition, Saheonbu had the Tea-time system where tea was drunk once every day for their responsibility and fair judgment. This ceremony was officially designated and regularized by the national authority to take a Tea-time before dealing with heavy punishment. At the beginning of Joseon, “Yadashi (Night Tea-time)” was a meeting where various inspectors secretly discussed and judged the crimes of bad government officials and enforced punishment at night. Those were the ceremonies having a cup of tea first and then deciding on important matters. Tea may also have the pharmacological effect of clearing the spirit and the meaning of seeking a correct judgment after stabilizing the body and mind through the ceremony of sharing a cup of tea. It was probably to take advantage of the benefits of tea to make correct decisions without bias while having a tea and being mentally clear and in a stable state of mind.
