민중신학의 구원론 ― 민중 주체성과 민중 메시아론

국문 초록

민중 메시아론은 민중신학의 핵심이자 동시에 가장 첨예한 쟁점이다. 민중 메시아론은 민중이 곧 메시아라는 것을 함축한다. 물론 이는 “민중이 곧 메시아”라는 의미인지 “민중이 메시아적 역할을 맡는다”는 의미인지 미묘한 차이에 따른 긴장을 내포하고 있지만, 민중의 자력 구원의 가능성을 인정하고 있다는 점에서 민중신학의 핵심적 요체로 여겨지고 있는 동시에 가장 첨예한 쟁점이 되고 있다. 민중 메시아론이 민중신학의 핵심이자 동시에 첨예한 쟁점이 되고 있는 까닭은, 그것이 기존 그리스도교의 구원론과는 확연하게 다른 신학적 인식을 함축하고 있기 때문이다. 위르겐 몰트만(J. Moltmann)을 비롯한 독일 신학자들은 “예수와 민중의 동일화”를 말하는 민중신학이 등장하게 된 한국의 역사적 맥락에 대한 이해를 표시하면서도 민중 메시아론에 대해서는 의문을 제기한다. “민중이 세계를 구원해야 한다면, 민중을 구원할 이는 누구인가?” 민중은 구원의 대상이라는 신학적 입장에서 던진 물음이었다. 민중 메시아론은 국내의 신학자들 가운데서도 뜨거운 쟁점이 되었다. 민중신학이 민중‘신학’이 아니라 ‘민중신’학으로 빠질 위험성이 있다고 경계하는 비판적 입장이 제기되는가 하면, 심지어는 민중신학 진영 내에서도 민중 메시아론을 일종의 독소조항과 같은 것으로 여기는 견해가 제기되기도 하였다. 이후 민중신학 내부에서는 이에 관한 제법활발한 논의가 이뤄졌다. 그 논의들은 민중 메시아론이 지니고 있는 쟁점의 성격을 잘 드러내 주고 있으며, 향후 이를 둘러싼 논의에서도 지속적으로 참고자료가 될 것이다. 이 글은 민중신학의 핵심 개념으로서 새로운 신학적 지평을 연 민중메시아론의 요체를 살펴봄으로써 그것이 어떻게 기존의 구원론과 다른지 평가한다. 나아가 그것을 둘러싸고 지속되어 온 논의에서 부각된 쟁점들을 환기하면서 역사적 현실에 대한 책임적 신앙의 근거로서 민중메시아론의 의의를 평가한다.

영문 초록

Minjung messianism is the core of Minjung theology and at the same time the most acute issue. Minjung messianism implies that the Minjung are the Messiah. Of course, this implies tension due to subtle differences in whether it means “the Minjung are the Messiah” or “the Minjung take on a messianic role,” but it is the core of Minjung theology in that it recognizes the possibility of Minjung’s self-salvation. It is regarded as a key point and at the same time it is becoming the most acute issue. The reason why Minjung messianism is the core of Minjung theology and at the same time a sharp issue is that it implies a theological awareness that is distinctly different from the existing Christian soteriology. German theologians, including Jürgen Moltmann, express their understanding of the historical context of Korea, where Minjung theology, which speaks of “the identification of Jesus and the Minjung,” appeared, but raise questions about Minjung messianism. “If the Minjung must save the world, who will save the Minjung?” It was a question posed from the theological standpoint that the people are the object of salvation. Minjung messianism has become a hot issue among theologians in Korea. A critical position was raised warning that Minjung theology could fall into ‘Minjung-God theory’ rather than ‘Minjung theology’, and even within the camp of Minjung theology, a view was raised that regarded Minjung messianism as a kind of poison clause. Since then, there have been quite active discussions about this within Minjung Theology. The discussions reveal the nature of the issues of Minjung messianism well, and will continue to serve as reference materials for discussions surrounding it in the future. This article evaluates how it differs from the existing soteriology by examining the essentials of Minjung messianism, which opened a new theological horizon as a key concept of Minjung theology. Furthermore, it evaluates the significance of Minjung messianism as a basis for responsible faith in historical reality, recalling the issues that have emerged from the ongoing discussions surrounding it.
