Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the structure and characteristics of the academic curriculum, military training curriculum, and disciplinary curriculum of the Korea Military Academy, Korea Naval Academy, Korea Air Force Academy, Korea Armed Forces Nursing Academy, and Korea Army Academy at Yeongcheon. Through such comparisons, the study aims to identify directions for improvement in the educational programs of each military academy and to propose relevant implications.
Method: To achieve this research objective, the study examined the educational curricula presented on the official websites of each academy and applied content analysis methods to comparatively analyze the academic, military training, and disciplinary curricula.
Results: The results of the study are as follows. First, the academic curricula of each academy are designed to confer bachelor’s degrees by offering major-specific courses and, additionally, military science degrees through required and elective courses in military science. These courses not only prepare cadets to lead in modern warfare through leadership training, weapons systems, and strategy but also address competencies needed for future warfare. Second, the military training curricula of each academy are structured to develop step-by-step competencies required for junior officers and also aim to cultivate potential leader-ship capabilities for commanding future forces. Third, the disciplinary curricula focus on fostering essential qualities of military officers, including leadership, military practice, security awareness, and physical fitness.
Conclusion: The Korea Military Academy, Korea Naval Academy, Korea Air Force Academy, Korea Armed Forces Nursing Academy, and Korea Army Academy at Yeongcheon are operating appropriate educational programs aimed at developing the academic, military, and moral competencies necessary for cadets to become future leaders of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Furthermore, they offer courses designed to prepare for multi-domain operations, including artificial intelligence (AI), space warfare, and cybersecurity. There is a need to further expand these future-oriented areas.
