The sense of “hot-bloodedness” (nekketsu) in Japanese anime represents an emotional disposition evoked primarily through instinctive perceptions of the audience. It commonly emerges from physiological stimuli experienced during viewing, resulting in intense emotional reactions such as excitement, euphoria, or anger. Additionally, empathetic resonance achieved through the recollection and reconstruction of emotional memories also contributes significantly to this experience. Although “hot-bloodedness” typically manifests as a transient emotional peak during climactic conflicts within anime narratives, it also produces lasting aftereffects, identified here as the phenomenon of “residual emotions” (yojō). This paper provides a meta-emotional analysis of “hot-bloodedness” in Japanese anime from three perspectives: firstly, it defines and clarifies the concept of “hot-bloodedness”; secondly, it identifies two fundamental types of “hotbloodedness” based on their emotional core—the negatively driven type, transforming anger into strength, and the positively driven type, characterized by empathetic resonance through emotional memories; finally, it investigates the lingering emotional aftereffects (“residual emotions”) arising from intense episodes of “hot-blooded” sentiment.
