국문 초록

대·내외적으로 ESG 경영에 대한 중요성이 증대됨에 따라 국내 기업의 ESG 성과를 제고할 수 있는 방안에 대한 정책적 대안이 모색되는 상황이다. 본 연구는 기업 ESG 성과에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 경쟁기업의 ESG 활동이 동료 효과로서 작용할 수 있음을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 기업의 ESG 점수와 동일 산업-동일 지역에 속한 경쟁기업의 ESG 평균 점수 간에 유의미한 양(+)의 상관관계로서 동료 효과가 도출되었다. 특히 ESG에 대한 기업의 노출도가 높은 수도권 지역에서 주로 그 동료 효과가 유의미하게 작동함이 발견되었다. 이는 기업 ESG 경영 제고를 위한 정책을 실시할 때 기업 간 경쟁 관계를 고려하여 동료 효과가 효과적으로 작동할 수 있는 방향의 정책 지원이 효과적이며, 기업들 간 ESG 교류를 활성화하기 위한 지원 정책이 전반적인 기업 ESG 제고에 효과적일 수 있음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

With growing recognition of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) importance in corporate management worldwide, there is an increasing need to identify effective policy measures to enhance ESG performance among Korean firms. This study empirically examines whether the ESG activities of competing firms serve as peer effects that influence a company’s own ESG performance. The analysis reveals a significant positive correlation between a firm’s ESG score and the average ESG score of its competitors within the same industry and region, indicating the presence of peer effects. Notably, this effect is particularly pronounced in the capital region, where firms are more exposed to ESG-related pressures. These findings suggest that when implementing policies to promote ESG management, it is effective to consider inter-firm competitive relationships that can activate peer effects. Promoting ESG-related knowledge sharing and collaborative initiatives among firms could contribute to raising the overall level of corporate ESG performance.
