Recovery can be defined as the process of restoring the body’s physiological and
psychological function to a pre-fatigued level of performance (Versey et al., 2013) and is
often considered a homeostatic rebalance (Soligard et al., 2016). In Team Sports, athletes
are now routinely exposed to longitudinal demands with, in some cases, only 24-48 hours
of recovery time between competition. An increased emphasis on post-exercise recovery
within training programs should allow the athlete improved subsequent performance and/
or quality of training, thus maintaining a suitable or improved stimulus for physiological
adaptations and ability to compete across season. Team Sport athletes are exposed to
many available techniques guided to accelerate recovery, although, efficacy of such
strategies lacks robust support and raises questions related to the sequencing and
administering timeline of such tools. The multifactorial nature of training and competition
and subsequent fatigue means that it is unlikely that one isolated intervention would be
effective in enhancing recovery and there is a need to match the appropriate strategy with
the physiological system. Cooling strategies, particularly cold water immersion have been
shown to have favorable effects on the secondary damage phase following exercise and
should be considered by athletes as an effective technique during these circumstances,
particularly following games and when consolidating recovery is the primary objective.
Cold water immersion appears to effect various physiological pathways including cellular
signaling, protein synthesis, vascularization and immunological cascades. Therefore, cold
water immersion may also be an appropriate strategy following endurance-related training
in competition periods although a more critical viewpoint including contextual factors
should be considered following more strength-related training sessions. A combined
approach considering the contextual factors and the physiological perturbations provides
a suitable foundation to effectively periodise cold water immersion and maximise the
intended outcome across the stress-recovery-adaptation in Team Sports.
