국문 초록

This study investigates the interrelationships among motivation, willingness to communicate (WTC), mindset, enjoyment, anxiety, grit, and self-perceived second language (L2) proficiency within the context of a Korean university. Utilizing structural equation modeling (SEM), this research explores a proposed framework to understand how these factors influence students’ L2 learning and communicative engagement. To address the research questions, the study involved 545 college students who completed a survey, and the data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). Results supported the validity of the proposed SEM, confirming causal relationships between the model’s latent variables. The results revealed that while mindset and enjoyment did not directly improve L2 proficiency, they positively influenced motivation. Mindset enhanced motivation but had no direct impact on L2 proficiency, whereas excessive enjoyment, despite boosting motivation, could hinder L2 proficiency. Furthermore, motivation significantly mediated the effects of grit, enjoyment, and mindset on L2 proficiency, but it did not mitigate the negative effects of high anxiety or low WTC. Discussions on research results and implications and limitations of the study are presented.
