진지한 여가(Serious Leisure)로서 문화예술 활동에 대한 질적 사례연구 - 중국 후난(湖南) 아마추어 성인 합창단을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 스테빈스(Stebbins)의 ‘진지한 여가’ 이론을 통해 중국 50대 이상의 성인으로 구성된 합창 단원들의 문화예술 활동 경험과 행동 특징을 탐구하여, 이들의 여가 참여 특징을 통해 나타난 문화사회학적 함의를 도출하기 위해 수행되었다. 본 연구는 질적 사례연구로 연구 참여자는 중국 후난 지역의 성인 합창단에서 활동 중인 55세에서 69세 사이의 중장년들로 구성되었으며, 총 13명의 단원과 심층 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 연구결과, 단원들은 신체적 노화, 심리적 스트레스 및 외부의 도전적 환경 속에서도 집단 내 책임감과 단원 사이의 지지를 통해 개인적 노력과 인내심을 바탕으로 강한 참여 동기를 생성·유지하는 것으로 확인되었다. 이러한 과정을 통해 이들의 진지한 여가 활동은 제2의 자아실현과 사회자본 등의 여러 가지 보상으로 이어지는 것 또한 확인되었다. 진지한 여가로서 이들의 합창 활동은 상호 지원과 관심을 중심으로 한 독특한 집단 문화를 형성하였고, 단원 내 강한 공동체성을 확립하는 데 기여했다. 중국 고유의 공동체 중심의 문화는 특히 이러한 과정을 강화 시키는 것으로 분석되었으며, 이는 서구의 개인 중심 문화와 대비된다는 점에서 유의미한 결과를 시사한다. 본 연구는 5060세대 성인들의 진지한 여가로서의 합창단 활동을 통해 이들의 사회적 역할을 재구성하고, 중장년 삶의 질 향상을 위한 실천적 경로를 제공한다는 데 함의를 제공한다.

영문 초록

This study investigates the cultural and social implications of leisure participation among choir members aged 50 and above in China, through the lens of Robert Stebbins’ Serious Leisure concept. By exploring their experiences in cultural and artistic activities, as well as their behavioral characteristics, this study aims to uncover the broader sociocultural meanings embedded in their leisure participation. Employing a qualitative case study approach, this research focuses on elderly choir members aged 55 to 69 who are actively involved in a choir in Hunan, China. In-depth interviews were conducted with 13 participants to gain insights into their motivations, challenges, and collective engagement in choir activities. The findings reveal that, despite physical aging, psychological stress, and external challenges, participants maintained strong motivation for continued engagement by fostering a sense of collective responsibility and mutual support within the group. Their leisure participation was driven by perseverance and personal effort, which ultimately led to self-actualization and the acquisition of social capital in later life. Furthermore, choir activities cultivated a unique group culture centered on reciprocal support and care, reinforcing a strong sense of community among members. The collectivist cultural values of Chinese society further strengthened this process, contrasting with the more individualistic leisure models observed in Western societies. This study provides theoretical insights into how elderly individuals reconstruct their social roles and practical implications for improving the quality of life in aging societies by emphasizing the significance of social integration, group cohesion, and intergenerational engagement.
