국문 초록

This paper aims to analyze -e pota construction in Korean, in terms of functional restructuring. Building on previous analyses of obligatory control environments involving the verb try, it is argued that as a functional restructuring verb, pota primarily expresses a progressive aspect along with an intentional modal flavor, making its meaning closely resemble that of try. Given this, it is also claimed that constructions with -e pota constitute genuine instances of exhaustive control, thereby pota in this context is hard to be treated merely as a auxiliary verb in a traditional sense. Furthermore, by presenting a range of novel contexts that clearly reveal the semantic characteristics of each verb, we offer a viable way to understand the progressive aspectual differences between pota and try.
