국문 초록

본고는 지구 양 편에 위치한 분단국의 대도시인 서베를린과 서울의 공동주택단지들에서 탈냉전의 전조를 찾아보려는 시도이다. 이들은 이념적 획일화와 사적 이익 및 기능적 효율성의 우위, 폐쇄성, 그리고 역사적 공동체의 파괴 등 냉전 도시 특유의 면모를 보여주었으며 또한 그것의 진화 과정에서도 국제적 탈냉전의 동시대성을 보여주었다. ‘국제건축전 베를린 1987’과 잠실 아시아선수촌아파트는 역사적, 사회문화적 맥락의 큰 차이에도 불구하고 냉전적 개발 이데올로기와의 결별을 통해 자율적이면서도 공동체적이고 활력적이면서도 환경친화적인 주거 공간을 창출해 갔던 점에서 공통적이었다. IBA가 기존의 철거 중심 재개발 방식에서 벗어나 베를린의 유서 깊은 단지형 블록을 부활시키려 부심하며 사회주택의 신축 및 재개발에 당대 최신의 포스트모더니즘 건축을 활용했던 반면, 아시아선수촌아파트는 개발독재의 산물인 대단위 고층 아파트단지의 무미건조한 환경을 극복하기 위해 길과 마당을 부각하는 다원적인 설계를 시도했다. 지구 양편에서의 건축적 실험은 냉전 도시 특유의 비인간화된 주거 공간을 일부나마 변화시킴으로써 결과적으로 탈냉전의 전령 역할을 수행했다. 이러한 역사적 사례들은 결국 ‘거주’의 의미에 대한 근본적 물음을 제기한다.

영문 초록

The present paper aims to identify the early signs of the post-Cold War era in the apartment complexes of West Berlin and Seoul, metropolises of divided countries on opposite sides of the globe. The analysis reveals that these housing complexes exhibited features that were characteristic of Cold War cities, including ideological uniformity, the dominance of private interests and functional efficiency, enclosure, and the destruction of historical communities. Paradoxically, both Cold War cities demonstrated the coevaleness in the evolution of the housing. Despite their marked differences in historical and socio-cultural contexts, the 1987 International Architecture Exhibition in Berlin and the Asian Athletes’ Village Apartments in Seoul shared a common thread: a departure from the typical Cold War ideology of development. This shift resulted in the creation of living spaces that were autonomous yet communal, vibrant yet environmentally sustainable. The IBA’s approach diverged from conventional demolition-driven redevelopment methods, opting for a postmodern architectural intervention in the regeneration of social housing in Berlin. Conversely, the Jamsil Asian Athletes’ Village Apartments sought to address the perceived sterility of large-scale high-rise apartment complexes, often seen as a by-product of development dictatorship, through a pluralistic design approach that prioritized streets and courtyards. Architectural experiments on both sides of the globe served as harbingers of the post-Cold War era, partially transforming the dehumanized living spaces characteristic of Cold War cities. These historical examples ultimately give rise to fundamental questions regarding the nature of human dwelling.
