국문 초록

본 논문은 여행지리서로서의 《도이지략》의 서술방식을 《제번지》와 함께 비교·고찰한다. 《도이지략》은 원대 왕대연이 중국 남해, 동남아시아, 인도, 아랍, 아프리카 곳곳에 관한 정보를 담은 여행기로서 직접 방문하여 보고들은 정보와 여행의 소회를 기록한 것이라는 점에서 큰 의미가 있다. 본 논문은 직접적인 견문의 기록이 《도이지략》에 어떤 방식으로 서술되어 있는지를 지리 환경에 대한 문학적 묘사, 1인칭 화자인 ‘나’의 개입, 그리고 기이한 이야기의 서술이라는 세 가지 측면으로 살펴본다. 《도이지략》에서 지리 정보에 대한 문학적 묘사는 실제 경험이나 현실을 더욱 핍진하게 묘사하는 방법이 되고, 1인칭 화자의 개입은 정보 위주의 지리서가 주지 못하는 독특한 사실성을 부여해준다. 이는 간접적인 견문의 기록이라고 할 수 있는 《제번지》와 확연히 다른 부분이다. 즉, 직접적 견문 속 문학적 묘사와 화자의 개입이 오히려 해당 지역에 대한 현실성을 배가시켜주는 것이다. 그리고 《도이지략》 속 기이한 이야기에 대한 분석에서는 특정 지역에 대한 저자의 거부감, 나아가 중국 중심의 가치관과 세계관이 이들 기록 속에 어떻게 반영되어 있는지를 살펴본다.

영문 초록

This paper compares and examines the narrative style of the Daoyi zhi lüe as a book of travel geography with that of the Zhufan zhi. As a travelogue containing information about various places in the Chinese South Sea, Southeast Asia, India, the Arab world and Africa, the Daoyi zhi lüe is significant in that it is a record of Wang Dayuan’s first-hand observations and travel impressions. This paper examines how the record of first-hand observation is narrated in the Daoyi zhi lüe from three aspects: the literary description of the geographical environment, the intervention of the first-person narrator “I”, and the telling of bizarre stories. The literary description of geographical information in the Daoyi zhi lüe becomes a more authentic way of describing actual experience or reality, and the intervention of the first-person narrator gives it a unique realism that information-oriented geography books do not have. This is quite different from the Zhufan zhi, which can be said to be a record of an indirect visit. In other words, the literary description and the narrator’s intervention in the direct visit actually multiply the realism of the area. The analysis of the bizarre stories in the Daoyi zhi lüe shows how the author’s historical rejection of certain regions, as well as his Chinese-centred values and worldview, are reflected in these records.
