국문 초록

유교 경전의 번역이 한자문화권 내 비중국어 언어들에서 재현된 결과이자 문학 발전의 모델로서 수행한 역할은 광범위하게 연구되어 왔다. 그러나 고전 해석을 탐색하는 과정에서 이러한 번역이 어떻게 수용되었으며 그 의미가 무엇인지는 지금까지 중국학 연구자들로부터 상대적으로 적은 주목을 받아 왔다. 본 연구는 유교 경전의 한국어와 만주어 번역이 정전 주석에 드러난 다양한 해석들에 대한 의미 있는 선택을 통해 이루어졌음을 주장한다. 번역들은 정통 해석 모델을 맹목적으로 따르지 않고, 주석과 교육 관행, 그리고 체계적이면서도 즉흥적인 번역 관습을 통해 독자적인 의미를 형성한다. 이로 인해 번역은 한편으로는 전통에 의존하면서도 다른 한편으로는 번역자의 창의적 해석을 바탕으로 새로운 의미를 구축하게 된다. 결과적으로 번역 자체가 경전에 대한 주석으로 기능하며, 번역 자신이 근거했던 해석학적 전통으로부터 점점 더 독립적인 경전 텍스트에 대한 해석을 제안하고 때로는 강요하며 자신만의 전통을 위한 토대를 마련한다.

영문 초록

The role of translations of the Confucian classics as works of representation and as models for literary development for the non-Sinitic languages of the Sinosphere are well-researched. Their reception and their meaning in the negotiation of interpreting the classics are subjects that have received less attention so far from scholars of Sinology. This article argues that translations of the classics into Korean and Manchu are informed by meaningful choices that rely on a selection of interpretations of the classics found in the canonical commentaries. Instead of blindly following an orthodox model of interpretation, the translations build their own meaning, from the commentaries, from teaching practices, and both from systematic and ad-hoc conventions of translation, thus relying on the tradition on the one hand, but also on the creative input by the translators on the other hand. As a result, the translations themselves function as commentaries on the texts, suggesting and sometimes enforcing an interpretation of the classical texts that becomes more and more independent of the tradition that they rely on, laying a foundation for a tradition of their own.
