국문 초록

T. S. 엘리엇의 미발표 시 ｢공원에서의 대화｣는 미발표 시집인 『3월 토끼의 노래: 1909년-1917년의 시』에 수록된 시다. 본 논문에서는 프랑스어 제목의 이 시를 1910-1911년의 발표된 초기 시나 미발표 시와 비교하며 면밀히 살펴본다. 엘리엇은 파리 유학 시절인 1911년 2월에 이 시를 쓴다. ｢공원에서의 대화｣는 엘리엇의 초기 시들처럼 프랑스 시인 라포르그와 영국 엘리자베스시대 극의 영향을 받은 시다. 이 시에서 화자 역할을 하는 청년은 자신의 공원에서의 경험을 회상하며 독백으로 들려준다. 엘리엇은 ｢공원에서의 대화｣에서 공원을 걷고 있는 청년과 그의 동료 젊은 여인이 처한 특별한 심리적 상황을 극적으로 연출한다. 공원에서 여인과의 관계를 분명히 하려고 단호한 결심을 하는 청년과 자신에게 무심한 여인 때문에 그가 겪는 당황, 원망 혹은 분노 같은 정서적 혹은 심리적인 내면의 상처를 엘리엇은 고찰한다. 특히 엘리엇은 이 시에서 여인과의 좌절된 관계로 인해 청년이 느끼는 절망, 고통과 실패 같은 감정의 돌파구로 하나님을 떠올릴 수 있다는 것을 암시하고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper is a new attempt to read in detail T. S. Eliot’s unpublished poem, “Entretien dans un parc,” comparing it with his early unpublished and published works. Eliot wrote French entitled poem, “Entretien dans un parc” in Inventions of the March Hare: Poems 1909-1917, in February 1911 during his Parisian year, 1910-11. Like Eliot’s early poetry, this poem is influenced by Jules Laforgue and Elizabethan drama. In this poem Eliot dramatizes a particular psychological situation in which a young man and his female companion walking in the park. Through the narrator, the young man’s monologue of memory in the park, Eliot explores his inner emotional or psychological damages such as embarrassment, anger or resentment caused by her indifference to his effort to resolve their relationship. Especially. Eliot implies that God may be an answer to relieve young man’s despair, suffering and sense of failure resulting from their frustrated relationship.
