국문 초록

이인수 교수의 ｢황무지｣국문 초역(初譯)은 1949년도에 월간 잡지 『신세대』 신년 호(新年号)에 발표되었다. 1950년 이 교수가 타계한 후, 그의 유족이 보존해온 미발표 ｢황무지｣ 육필번역본은 2006년 12월 『 T. S. 엘리엇 연구』(The Journal of The T. S. Society of Korea)에 처음으로 공개되었다. 초역 국문 ｢황무지｣는 이인수 이름으로 출판되었지만, 자신이 밝히고 있듯이 실제로는 그의 고려대학교 영문과 제자였던 김종길(金宗吉)과 공역(共譯)이었다. 초역 ｢황무지｣를 미발표 육필 원고본 ｢황무지｣와 자세히 대조 조사해보면, 초역 ｢황무지｣는 육필번역본 ｢황무지｣를 저본(底本)으로 하여 부분적으로 수정하고 다듬은 것임을 알 수 있다. 사실, 초역 ｢황무지｣는 육필 ｢황무지｣에 있는 동일한 어휘, 시행, 시구를 고스란히 지니고 있다. 심지어는 육필번역본에 있는 오역(誤譯)이나 오독(誤讀)까지 가끔 그대로 답습하고 있다. 또 초역 ｢황무지｣는 주요 어휘─명사, 동사, 형용사, 그리고 부사─가 일반적으로 어느 정도 적절한 다른 동의어로 대치되었다는 점이 육필번역본과 다르다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 어떤 시어들은 다소 부자연스럽다. 아마도, 인쇄본 ｢황무지｣의 가장 눈에 띄는 점은 481행이나 되는 육필번역본의 시행을 영문 원작보다 단지 3행이 더 많은 436행으로 줄인 점이다.

영문 초록

Lee In Soo’s first Korean translation of The Waste Land was originally published in the January number for the monthly magazine, The Sinsedae (New Generation), in 1949. The second one, an unpublished holograph manuscript, has been in the possession of the Lee’s family after his death in 1950. It was printed in the Journal of the T. S. Eliot Society of Korea in December 2006. The first Korean translation appeared under the name of Lee In Soo, but in reality it was a work of collaboration by Lee and his student Kim Chi-kyu, as he acknowledged in his “Translator’s Note.” Collating the published translation, word by word, with the holograph manuscript shows clearly that the published text is a partially revised and polished version based on the holograph manuscript. In fact, the published version keeps intact a great number of words, lines and pssages identical with those in the holograph. Moreover, it often replicates mis-translations and mis-readings from the manuscript text. The published text differs from the holograph to the extent that words─nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs─are replaced with other synonyms which are more adequate in general. But some are a little strained. Perhaps, the most salient feature of the published text lies in reducing the sprawling 481 lines of the holograph text to 436 lines, only three lines more than the original poem.
