국문 초록

William Baird was a missionary who had devoted himself for 40 years to missionary work in Korea (1891-1931). His work, well known as the founder of Soongsil University, had a profound impact on not only education but also on establishing the foundation of early Korean churches. Nevertheless in the meantime, the study of his work in the korean church history has been mainly focused on the work in Pyongyang, the education business and document mission. There was little research on activities in Busan and Daegu, which were relatively early in his missionary work, especially in Daegu-Gyeongbuk. Beard left a historic trail that pioneered the Daegu mission station as the first missionary in Daegu-Gyeongbuk province through his second round evangelical tour in 1893. Therefore, Beard in Daegu-Gyeongbuk area has a special meaning of 'the first' missionary, not one of the various missionaries. This study based on the meaning of the local church history examines the Baird mission work focusing on his second round evangelical tour. Recently, the central axis of research on the Korean church history has been shifted from the center to the region. This phenomenon is positive in that it has a variety of interpretation of church history through the mutual intersection between macroscopic and microscopic. The purpose of this article is not to study simple characters about Baird. Instead, this study tried to examine how the local churches in Daegu- Gyeongbuk retained the tradition and heritage of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. by the influence of his mission work, and how the indigenous Koreans who reached contact, acceptance and conversion with the gospel by a meeting with him became the early church members of the region and became the subject of the establishment of a native church.
