경판 30장본 <춘향전>의 표준본적 성격

국문 초록

본고는 종전에 거론된 중요한 이본들은 물론, 근년의 이본 연구에서 다루어진 여러 이본 중에 현대인들이 읽기에 가장 적합한 이본을 찾고자 했다. 그러기 위해 종전에 주로 사용한 선본이라는 개념 대신 표준본을 제안하였다. 선본이 이본의 가치에 초점을 맞춘 개념인 반면 표준본은 향유의 유용성에 초점을 둔 것이다. 그래서 <춘향전>을 읽고 연구하기에 가장 좋은, 기본이 될 수 있는 이본을 찾고자 한 것이다. 표준본은 향유 목적과 향유자에 따라 달라질 수 있으니 꼭 한 종으로 정해야 할 필요는 없다. 다만 <춘향전>을 처음 읽는 사람들이나 <춘향전>을 가지고 연구와 교육을 해야 하는 사람들이 맨 처음 읽을 만한, 그리고 서로 소통할 수 있는 공통의 이본이 마련되면 편리할 것이다. 본고는 종전 선본의 선정에서 기준으로 이용된 원본성, 최고성, 기본성, 완정성, 문학성 외에 표준본의 기준으로 새로 대표성, 접근성, 현재성 등을 제시하면서, 이를 토대로 경판 30장본 <춘향전>을 표준본으로 제안하였다. 경판 30장본은 1850년대를 전후한 시기에 서울에서 출간된 이본으로 한글본으로서는 가장 이른 시기에 만들어진 이본이다. 이보다 앞선 시기에 저술된 한문본은 있지만 <춘향전>이 판소리 등 한글문화의 산물이라는 점을 감안할 때, 한글본이 표준본으로 적당하다고 본다. 경판 30장본은 20세기 초에 만들어진 <열녀춘향수절가>에 비해서는 제작 시기 면에서 크게 앞선 장점이 있으나, <남원고사>에 비해 분량이 4분의 1에 불과하다는 특징이 있다. 분량이 적어서 표현이 풍부하지 않다고 볼 수도 있지만 오히려 표현의 적절성 면에서는 장점이 될 수도 있다고 보았다. 경판 30장본은 무엇보다 대표성 면에서는 다른 이론을 크게 압도하는데, 이판만 두어 종이 있을 뿐만 아니라 이후의 경판 <춘향전>이 거의 그 영향권 내에 있었다. 경판 30장본 <춘향전>은 조선 후기 춘향 서사를 석권한 대표적인 이본으로 <춘향전>의 표준본이 되기에 충분한 조건을 갖추고 있다고 본다.

영문 초록

In Chunhyangjeon 春香傳’s case, it was difficult to select an edition close to the original because it was difficult to identify the author. Therefore, we looked for an edition that showed the characteristics of Pansori, which is the origin of Chunhyangjeon, or the characteristics of a lower class in expression and description. In the history of research on Chunhyangjeon, which began in earnest in the 1930s, a song of Lady Chunhyang 烈女春香守節歌 was used as a representative edition; however, since the late 1970s, Namwon-Gosa 南原故事 was regarded as another important edition. This article accepts the recent edition studies, proposes the concept of a standard edition instead of the original, and attempts to find the most basic edition for reading and research on Chunhyangjeon. A standard edition is not necessarily the best edition, and it is not necessary to define a standard edition as only one text. Those who read Chunhyangjeon for the first time and those who need to study Chunhyangjeon should read it first and choose a standard edition that allows them to communicate with each other. This article attempts to present the Seoul wood-block print 30 sheets of Chunhyangjeon as a standard edition based on originality, antiquity, basicity, completeness, literature, representation, and closeness to the readers. The Seoul wood-block print 30 sheets of Chunhyangjeon 京板30張本 was published around the 1850s and is the earliest Chunhyangjeon in Korean. Some Chunhyangjeon in Chinese were written earlier. However, considering that Chunhyangjeon is a product of the vernacular Korean culture such as Pansori, Korean texts are appropriate as a standard edition. Seoul wood-block print 30 sheets of Chunhyangjeon is only one-fourth of the volume of Namwon-Gosa, considering that Namwon-Gosa added many songs sung in the Seoul area at that time and increased the volume. Furthermore, not only are there three versions of this edition but all the subsequent Seoul wood-block print Chunhyangjeon, except 35 sheets, are also within the sphere of influence. In summary, it can be said that it is a representative edition that swept the Chunhyang narratives of the late Joseon.
