영문 초록

Kang, Sunok. 2021. “A Minimalist Study on the Syntactic Differences of Structures of the Complement Clauses of Verbs, believe and want.” J ournal of The B ritish & American Language, Literature and E ducation 35(1), 7-26. The purpose of this study is to investigate the syntactic differences of complement clauses of verbs, believe and want based on Chomsky s (2000, 2001a, 2004) Phase theory and Collins s Smuggling Approach (2003, 2005a, 2005b). Verbs, believe and want, have their complements as infinitive clauses. This study is focusing on the grammatical differences between the two passive sentences with verbs, believe and want. By Collins(2003b, 2005a, 2005b) s Smuggling Approach, we can predict that the sentence of passive form, be wanted, would be correct, but it is not grammatically right. To avoid this wrong prediction, this study shows the syntactic differences from verbs, believe and want based on the framework of Chomsky’s Minimalist Program, arguing the complementizer, C of verb want has a–C feature according to its selectional property.
