국문 초록

본 연구는 후보의 영화 <코끼리는 그곳에 있어>가 중국의 오늘과 인간의 삶을 향한 서사를 어떻게 구축하였는지 그 재현의 미학을 중심으로 고찰한 것이며, 이러한 <코끼리>의 서사가 우리에게 어떤 시사점을 던지고 있는가에 대해서도 논한 것이다. <코끼리>는 비전형적인 극영화 플롯 구성 방식 중 하나인 다중시점과 탈프레임 시퀀스, 트래블링 카메라 워킹으로 현실을 재구축하고, 이로써 국가와 사회 시스템의 구조적인 배제 하에서 발생되는 개인에 대한 폭력과 공동체를 위한 법과 제도에 의해 소외당하는 중국 민초들의 불행의 악순환에 대해 고발한 영화다. <코끼리> 속 인물들은 가족과 사회 공동체의 진정한 일원으로 존재하고 싶었지만 배제당하며 만저우리 동물원이라는 토포필리아를 찾아 이동한다. 그들은 우리 속에 앉아 있는 코끼리를 사회 속에서 최소한의 안정이라도 취할 수 있는 주체로 바라보았다. 어느 곳에서나 상실감을 얻은 인물들은 동물원의 코끼리처럼 구속될 것을 바라며 그것을 구원의 한 양상으로 인식하는데, 후보는 이와 같은 묘사를 통해 중국의 현실을 비판하는 것이다. 또한 후보는 소외당한 인물들이 코끼리를 보기 위해 함께 하는 여정에서 자신과 유사한 처지에 있는 이들에게 다가서는 동시대인으로서의 모습도 그리고 있다. 이에 우리는 <코끼리>를 통해 사회의 내부에 늘 존재하지만 쉽게 망각하고 살아가는 문제들에 대해 의식해야 한다는 것을 환기할 수 있으며, 호모 사케르가 양산되는 이 시대에 동시대인으로 서는 것이 인간 사이의 작은 연대라도 생성할 수 있는 방법이라는 것을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study considered how An Elephant Sitting Still, a film directed by Hubo, established the narrative about China of today and human life, around the aesthetic of reproduction and discussed what suggestions such a narrative of An Elephant Sitting Still provides to us. An Elephant Sitting Still established the narrative with multi-views, post-frame sequences and traveling camera walking, which are some of atypical plot composition methods of film dramas. It, therefore, exposes daily violence occurring under the structural exclusion by national and social systems and the vicious cycle of tragedy and misery, experienced by Chinese grass roots alienated by laws and institutions for the community. Although characters appearing in An Elephant Sitting Still hope to be true members of families and the social community, they are thrown away and excluded, so they move toward the Manzhouli zoo, Topophilia. They viewed an elephant sitting in a cage as the subject who can take a minimal rest in the society. All characters feeling deprived anywhere desire to be constrained, like elephants in zoos, while recognizing such constraint as a mode of salvation. By using such a description, Hubo criticizes the Chinese reality. He also, however, describes the ‘small solidarity’ in which alienated characters approach others who are placed in a similar situation, in the journey together to find out elephants. We may feel that it is necessary to be conscious of a problem which has always existed in our ‘inside’, but of which we have been forgetful, and can take a glance at how to exist as ‘contemporaries’ in the era in which Homo Sacar is continued to be massively produced.
