아랍어 파생어로서의 말타어의 음운 연구

국문 초록

이 논문 전반을 통하여 말타어는 아랍어에서 파생된 셈어의 하나이지만, 1000여 년의 기나긴 세월 동안 인도-유럽어족의 언어 및 문화와 접촉한 결과많은 변화를 거친 끝에 지금은 아랍어와는 서로 이해가 되지 않는 별개의언어로 간주되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 즉, 말타어는 아랍어에서 파생된 언어이지만, 아랍어와는 독립된 언어임을 나타낸다. 이 연구는 아랍어에서 파생된 말타어를 음운론적 관점에서 고찰한 것으로서, 말타어는 언어학적 관점에서 흥미로운 언어이다. 이것은 언어학적, 문화적, 역사적 측면에서 연구자의 관심을 불러일으킨다. 따라서 이에 연구를 더욱장려하고, 연구물에 대한 홍보가 필요하다고 본다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to study of Maltese phonology as an Arabic (a Semitic language) offshoot language. Maltese is descent from Siculo-Arabic which is a kind of Maghribi Arabic. Chapter II introduces a general overview of the history of Malta before and after the Arab invasion. Malta has a long history more than 8000 years. Nevertheless the Arab period is very short (870-1090). Chapter III explains the Maltese orthography which is written in Roman alphabet to find out its narrow transcription. Chapter IV examines the phonemes of Maltese in aspects of vowels, consonants and syllable structure, in which the followings are found : Maltese has various vowels and diphthongs totaling 21 phonemes which are very common in Romance languages and English, but Arabic, 8 phonemes. Maltese, which has 22 consonants, lost emphatic and guttural consonants which are distinctive feature in Arabic, which has 28 consonants, but has p, v, ċ[tʃ], z[ts] not found in Arabic. Maltese has (C)(C)(C)V(C)(C) in syllable structure, while Arabic, CV(C)(C). In conclusion, this study shows that the Maltese is an offshoot language from Arabic, but it was heavily influenced by Romance languages such as Italian and Sicilian, and nowadays by English.
