콥트어 토마 복음의 인간 구원에 관한 소고

국문 초록

토마 복음은 ‘살아 계신’ 예수님의 114가지 ‘비밀 가르침’으로 구성되어 있다. 1945년 이집트 나그함마디에서 발견된 52가지 문서 가운데 하나인 콥트어 토마 복음 본문은 그리스어 또는 (시리아어)원문을 옮긴 것이며, 현존하는 토마 복음 본문 가운데 유일하게 온전한 형태로 전해진다. 이 글에서는 콥트어 토마 복음의 구원론을 다룬다. 여기서 이 복음이 구원을 자신과 세상 그리고 하느님에 관한 지식을 통해 이루어지는 것으로 제시할 뿐 아니라, 금욕을 통해성 구분을 제거함으로써 태초의 상태, 최초의 단일성을 회복하는 것으로 제시한다는 것을 보여 주고자 한다. 따라서 토마 복음은 “이 말씀들의 해석을 발견하는 사람은 죽음을 맛보지 않을 것이다”(1)라고 말하며, 자신을 알게 된 사람은 살아 계신 하느님의 자녀라고 한다(3). 또한 토마 복음은 ‘하늘나라’에 들어가는 사람은 ‘어린이들’ ‘오직 하나인 사람’ ‘혼자인 사람’ 곧 성 구분을 제거하여 태초의 단일성을 회복한 사람이라고 한다. 다시 말해 살아계신 아버지께서 ‘하나’이시며 ‘나눔이 없으신 분’이신 것처럼 그분께 뽑힌 사람들도 ‘오직 하나’이며 ‘홀로’ 온전한 사람이 되어야 한다는 것이다. 이러한 맥락에서 그리스도의 역할은 이러한 진리를 알려주는 것, 곧 ‘지식’을 전달하는 것이다. 곧 하느님과 인간의 기원, 현 상태와 운명에 대한 계시된 지식을 인간에게 전달함으로써 구원을 얻게 하는 것이다.

영문 초록

The Gospel of Thomas is consists of 114 “secret teachings” attributed to “the living Jesus”. The Coptic text of the Gospel of Thomas is a translation of an original Greek(or Syriac) text. The Coptic translation is the only complete version of the Gospel of Thomas extant today, which survives as one of fifty-two tractates discovered in 1945 at Nag Hammadi, Egypt. In this study, I treat soteriology of the Coptic Gospel of Thomas and argue that in this Gospel, salvation can be understood not only as something achieved through knowledge of oneself, of the world and of God but also as a return to the original state of man in the beginning, a return to the original “oneness” through the removal of separation and division of sexes. Such a removal of separation can be achieved by means of ascetic life. Thus, the Gospel of Thomas said: “Whoever finds the interpretation of these sayings will not taste death”(1), and whoever achieved self-knowledge is the son of the living father(3). And in Thomas we are told that it is the asexual “little children”, the “single ones” and the “solitary”, who attain the “kingdom”. In other words, it is those who restore the primordial state of ‘oneness’ through ascetic life that enter the kingdom of God. And just as the living Father is the ‘One’ and the ‘Undivided’, the electee of Him should be a ‘single one’ and ‘solitary’. In this connection, the function of Christ is to come bringing gnosis, the revealed knowledge of God and the mankind’s origin, as well as its present state and destiny, by means of which man can receive redemption.
