시권(試券)을 통해 본 유교적 인간상 고찰

국문 초록

본고에서는 조선시대 시권에 나타난 인간상에 대해 고찰하였다. 이황, 안담수, 김성탁 등이 과거에 응시했을 때 문왕, 굴원, 이응과 곽태, 백희와 문강 등에 대해 논의하되 특히 이들의 특정 행위에 대해 논술하는 문제가 출제되었다. 이들은 각각 중국역사에서 성군, 충신, 고사, 열녀 등으로 평가받는 인물로 재론의 여지가 없는 인물들이었다. 김성탁은 문과시험에서 문왕이 성군임을 확인하고 조선의 왕도 문왕의 정신을 계승하여야 함을 건의하였으며, 진사시험에서는 굴원이 충신임을 강조하기 위해 주자의 논리를 충실하게 끌어다가 양웅의 논리에 반박하였다. 이황은 향시에서 당대 신하의 역할은 도탄에 빠진 백성을 구하는 것이라고 하면서 이응과 곽태를 신선으로 선망한 것이 잘못되었을 뿐 이들이 갖춘 덕은 인정해야 한다고 하였고, 안담수는 생원시에서 백희의 절의가 본받아야 하는 여인의 덕목임을 강조하였다. 이처럼 시권에서 유교국가의 가치를 대표하는 이들에 대한 논의를 요구하는 이유는 결국 이들에 대한 비판보다는 이들의 행위를 환기하여 유교적 가치를 강조하기 위해서임을 확인할 수 있었다. 즉 당대 시험 출제의 의도는 모르는 답을 찾기를 바라는 것이 아니라 아는 답을 확인하여 공인된 가치관을 공고히 하려한 점이 있었음을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper presents an investigation into the human characters in Shigwon during Joseon. Such characters as Munwang, Gulwon, Yieung, Gwaktae, Baekhee and Mungang were discussed through the Shigwons of Lee Hwang, Ahn Dam-su, and Kim Seong-tak with questions made to discuss their particular acts. They are praised as sage kings, loyal subjects, Gosas, or chaste women in the Chinese history, leaving no room for re-reviews. Kim Seong-tak confirmed that Munwang was a sage king and proposed that kings of Joseon should inherit his spirit. He also fully embraced the logic of Zhu Xi and refuted that of Yangwoong to highlight that Gulwon was a loyal subject. Lee Hwang argued that the one of the roles of subjects should be to save people in distress and that the virtues of Yieung and Gwaktae should be recognized since it was only wrong to admire them as Taoist hermits with miraculous powers. Ahn Dam-su emphasized that Baekhee's fidelity was one of virtues that women should emulate. Those findings indicate that Shigwon requested discussions about the figures representing the values of a Confucian state to arouse people's interest in their acts and emphasize the Confucian values rather than criticizing them. That is, the intent of exam questions those days was to have examinees check the answers they already knew and confirm the officially recognized values rather than finding answers they did not know.
