목은 이색의 절의(節義) 실천과 후대의 평가

국문 초록

본고에서는 목은 이색이 '절의(節義)'를 어떻게 인식하였으며, 실제 삶에서 어떻게 실천하였는가를 살펴보았다. 또한 조선 초기 역사기록은 목은의 행적에 대해 큰 변질을 가하게 되는데, 변질된 내용이 무엇이며, 그 이유가 무엇이었는가도 살펴보았다. 목은 이색은 고려말을 대표하는 문인으로 정치적 위상뿐만 아니라 학문적으로도 큰 업적을 이룬 인물이다. 특히 온 힘을 다해 고려를 부지하고자 노력하였고, 고려를 위해 조금도 흐트러짐 없이 절개와 의리를 지키는 삶을 살았다. 또한 우리나라에 성리학을 근착시켜 조선 성리학을 자라게 하였음도 큰 업적 중 하나이다. 그러나 조선 초기의 복잡한 정치적 상황에 따라 그에 대한 행적은 축소되고 은폐되었으며, 심지어 폄훼되기에 이르렀다. 불사(佛事)를 좋아하였다거나, 태조 이성계와 뜻을 같이했다거나, 태조에게 한산백(韓山伯)이라는 봉작을 받았다는 등의 말로 실절(失節)한 인물로 폄훼하였다. 그러나 이러한 사실은 모두 조작된 것이었으며, 그의 시문과 삶의 행적에서 명확하게 증명되고 있다. 또한 조선 초기의 목은에 대한 이와 같은 부정적 평가는 백사 이항복, 우암 송시열, 면암 최익현 등 조선 후기의 유자들에 의해서도 당시 역사에 대한 의도적인 오기로 인해 발생된 잘못된 시각임을 재확인 하였다.

영문 초록

This study shows that how Mogeun Lee-saek acknowledged loyalty and how to practice it in his real life. Also, it is researched what Mogeun's achievements is changed by historical record of the early part of Joseon Dynasty, and why it happened. Mogeun Lee-saek, a literary man representing the last period of Koryo, achieved not only political status but exceptional academic legacy. In particular, Mogeun devoted himself to sustaining Goryo and maintained honor and loyalty for Goryo perfectly. Moreover, the settlement and development of Neo-Confucianism in our nation is one of the Mogeun's best achievements. However, Mogeun's accomplishments had been reduced, suppressed, and even disparaged due to the complex political situations in the early part of Joseon Dynasty. Mogeun had been derogated by sayings that he admired Buddism, collaborated with the King Taejo Lee Sung-gye, or took investiture from the King Taejo. However, most criticism is sure to be invented, which can be proved by his poetry and achievements of his life. Furthermore, it was reaffirmed Baksa Lee-hanbok, Woam Song-siyol and Myunam Choi-ikhyun by that the negative evaluation of Moguen in the early Joseon had been the wrong perspective created by the history record intentionally invented.
