This thesis is over aspects of the Maghrebi people's way of thinking through motifs of sex, social life and religion represented in Moroccan and Tunisian folk tales. Furthermore, the research is intended to understand how much sacredness is linked with profaneness or secularity in the Maghrebi people's minds. In this study, 36 folk tales relevant to the motifs among Moroccan and Tunisian folk tales, were selected and analyzed. Firstly, Moroccan and Tunisian folk tales show common people's intents to quench their primitive sexual desires. Islam is characteristic of not restraining man's sexual desires but it shows openness toward sexual instinct. This is proved in folk tales that contain various anecdotes related with sexuality and eroticism, which portray Muslims' in agony due to love and their love affairs related to pure love or passionate love. Secondly, as for the motif of social life I observed three motifs: motif of the Berbers and the Jews in Morocco, motif of marriage and motif of Muslim's sense of economy. Some Berber folk tales hint that the Berber people while accepting Islam in the past days have undergone discord with the Arab conquerors. And I found out some stories which prove that the problem of hatred and feud between Muslims and the Jews in Maghreb have been serious. And there are stories which indicate real matters of marriage such as men's economic ability in matrimonial life, men's worry about mahr(bride price) and the Maghrebi community's negative view of adultery. And some stories are effective in instructing the mass of people in righteous mind of economy. Thirdly, in relation to the motif of religion, Moroccan and Tunisian folk tales represent various aspects of folklore faith opposite to Islam. Among the noteworthy folk beliefs connected with popular customs, there are worship of saints, belief of fatalism, and practice of shaman ritual. The folk tales suggest that many people have earnest desire for blessing and good fortune through respected saints. Also, the tales show the Maghrebi people's submission to fate, and their reliance on magic, amulet and shawwāfāt(she-shamans), in resolving their spiritual or psychological problems. In conclusion, Moroccan and Tunisian folk tales reflect the Maghrebi people's own way of thinking that stem from their real life, history and cultural heritage. The folk tales do not always give emphasis to Islamic holy values, but contain many secular themes and motifs showing human's will and natural desire.
