국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 시대에 따른 한국가족의 발달적 변화를 파악하기 위해 공세권(1987)의 연구틀을 빌어 결혼코호트별로 가족생애주기를 분석하는 것이다. 공세권은 「한국의 가족생활 주기조사」를 통해 15-64세 기혼여성 3,013명을 대상으로 1935-44년 결혼코호트부터 1975-85년 결혼코호트까지 가족주기 6단계(형성기, 확대기, 확대완료기, 축소기, 축소완료기, 해체기)의 구성비율과 구성시점을 비교하였다. 본 연구에서는 여성가족패널 자료를 활용하여 7,330명의 기혼여성을 1958-84년, 1985-94년, 1995-04년 결혼코호트로 구분하여 공세권 연구 이후의 가족생애주기 변화를 추적하였다. 분석 결과를 보면, 첫째, 가족생애주기의 절대적 시간은 연장되었고, 가족생애주기가 개인의 생애과정에서 차지하는 비중은 감소하였다. 둘째, 자녀수가 감소함에 따라 확대기에 소요되는 시간은 단축되었고, 확대완료기는 연장되었다. 확대완료기가 연장되었다는 것은 가족의 구조적 변화가 없는 안정적 시기가 연장되었다는 것을 의미한다. 셋째, 축소기는 단축되었고, 축소완료기는 연장되어 부부 두 사람만 생활을 공유하는 시기는 연장되었다. 넷째, 지속적으로 연장되어오던 해체기가 1985-94년 결혼코호트부터는 단축되고 있다. 결론적으로 가족의 구조적 변화는 압축적으로 진행되는 반면 발달적 변화는 더 장기화되고 있으며, 이러한 변화는 가족관계와 생활에도 영향을 미치게 될 것으로 예측된다.

영문 초록

This study investigated changes in family life cycle during the last few decades. The concept of family life cycle provides an analysis framework from a family developmental perspective. It allows to explore how macro demographic changes are translated into structural and developmental changes at family level. In spite of importance in family and demographic research, few studies have examined recent trends of the family life cycle with empirical data with an exception of Gong (1987). Gong collected data from 3,013 married women and divided them into six marriage cohorts from 1935-1944 to 1975-1984 in a ten year interval. He identified six stages of the family life cycle(stage 1: formation, stage 2: expansion, stage 3: end of expansion, stage 4: reduction, stage 5: end of reduction, and stage 6: dissolution) and estimated the mean duration of each stage by the marriage cohorts. This study employed the Gong(1987)'s analysis and updated it by applying to more recent marriage cohorts of 1985-1994, 1995-2004, and 2005-2007. Using Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families, we selected 7,730 married women and divided them into six marriage cohorts from 1958-1964 to 2005-2007 in a ten year interval. From the analysis, I found several important results with respect to changes in the family life cycle. First, the duration of the whole family life cycle has expanded since the Gong's cohorts due to the lengthened life expectancy. However, the proportion of the family life cycle out of the entire individual life span has been reduced. Second, the duration of stage 2 has been steadily reduced and the duration of stage 3 has been lengthened. Third, the duration of stage 4 has been reduced and the duration of stage 5 has been expanded. Fourth, the duration of stage 6 has increased up to the 1985-1994 marriage cohort and then decreased beginning the 1995-2004 marriage cohort. Last, those who do not follow the family life cycle such as the divorced and remarried have increased. These findings imply that the structural aspect of family has been steadily changed due to aging, low fertility, and delayed marriages. These changes not only influence family relations and life but also modify individual life courses. Demographic policies and family policies need to take these changes into account in centenarian era.
