복음서의 다양성에 근거한 그리스도 탄생의 의미

영문 초록

When we intend to grasp the significance of Christ's Birth recorded in Matthew and Luke, we come to be puzzled because two birth narratives such as the wise men narrative of Matthew and the shepherd narrative of Luke are quite different. We may ask why they made use of the different narratives unlike the other narratives in which they often interpreted the same incidents in different ways according to their particular theological intentions. In this context, we may say simply that Matthew made use of the wise men narrative because he did not know the shepherd narrative in Luke's Gospel, but on the other hand we may also claim that Matthew used it on purpose even though he already knew the shepherd narrative, and vice versa. For obtaining our goal, we have reviewed the wise men narrative in terms of Matthew's unique features such as universalism and favouritism of the rich, and in turn the shepherd narrative in light of Luke's distinctive trait such as favouritism of the poor. Out of our careful consideration of the two narratives mentioned above, we come to conclude that even though Matthew knew the shepherd narrative in Luke's Gospel he made use of the wise men narrative because he wished to present his gospel in favour of the rich christians in his community and the Gentile christians as well. On the other hand, although Luke already knew the wise men narrative in Matthew's gospel, he made use of the shepherd narrative because he desired to introduce his gospel in favour of the poor christians in his community. Thus the birth narratives in Matthew and Luke is a typical case which shows us how to understand the diversity of the synoptic gospels in a proper way.
