Summary
As Bouvard and Pécuchet's intellectual pursuits become more extreme, they become increasingly isolated from the world around them. They retreat to a country house and live in self-isolation, surrounded by books and experiments.
In the final section of the novel, Bouvard and Pécuchet's experiments lead to a catastrophic explosion that destroys the house and kills them both. The novel ends with an ironic commentary on the frailty of human knowledge and the futility of human endeavor.
