Na, Eun-Mi. 2003. A Sociolinguistic .study of Personal Names : On the Variation across Generations and Sexes. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea, 11(1). This study conducts research into cross-generational and between-sex variations found in personal names and the social standards or values reflected in the variation and change. This study is based on the assumption that each generation has its peculiar features and tendencies when' making names. The following are features found in each generation's common names. The Chinese character used most in women's names is '자(子)' in 194Os, '숙(淑)' in 1906, and '지(智/志/之) in 1980s and 1990. The most common Chinese character used for men's names is '창(昌/倉), in 1940s, '상(尙/相)' in 1960s, '현(炫/賢/鉉)'in 1980s, and '준(俊/準)' in 1990s. Consonants ended names in a higher percentage than vowels. 'ㄱ,ㄴ.ㄹ,ㅁ,ㅂ,ㅇ' were used for male names. 'ㅂ' was not used in the women's names and 'ㄴ' was used often both in men's and women's names.
