Kim, Myungsook. 2003. Loan Words in English, English Language and Lingulstlcs 15. 1-18. English has been influenced by loan words in a very special way that no other language has been so far. The vocabulary of the Present Day English is considered to be cosmopolitan, rich in synonyms, and productive in affixing. All of these properties came from accepting and utilizing many loan words from various languages around the world. Especially, loan words from French and Latin changed the English vocabulary form its original Germanic character towards its dual Germanic and Romance character. According to Hughes (2000), more than half of the 600 English core vocabulary are loan words and they are frequently being used in everyday life. Loan words are sometimes used in their original 'adopted' forms, but they are also used in new 'adapted' forms after undergoing English rules for word formation and/or pronunciation. In sum, loan words have provided English with affluent vocabulary, but they encouraged the loss of Germanic words and weakened is ability of compounding .
