국문 초록

본 연구는 디지털 전환과 인터넷 전문은행의 등장으로 경쟁이 심화된 국내 주요 은행의 효율성과 생산성 변화를 분석했다. 2020년부터 2024년까지 13개 은행의 패널 데이터를 활용해 DEA와 Malmquist 생산성 지수를 활용하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 인터넷전문은행이 가장 높은 경영 효율성을 보였으며 지방은행은 상대적 으로 부진했다. 특히 비효율의 원인으로 규모의 문제가 많이 나타났는데, 시중은행은 IRS(규모수익체증) 상태를, 지방은행은 IRS와 DRS(규모수익체감) 상태가 혼재된 모습을 보였다. 생산성 측면에서 시중은행은 기술혁신을, 일부 지방은행은 내부 효율화 개선을 통해 생산성을 높이는 이원화된 성장 패턴이 확인되었다. 본 연구는 국내 은행 산업이 기술과 규모에 따라 구조적으로 분화되고 있음을 시사하며, 그룹별 차별화된 전략의 필요성을 제기한다는 점에서 의의를 가진다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the changes in efficiency and productivity of major Korean banks amid intensified competition driven by digital transformation and the emergence of internet-only banks. The analysis was conducted using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) on panel data from 13 banks from 2020 to 2024. The results showed that internet-only banks exhibited the highest managerial efficiency, while regional banks were relatively underperforming. Notably, scale issues were a significant source of inefficiency: commercial banks were in a state of increasing returns to scale (IRS), while regional banks showed a mixed state of both IRS and decreasing returns to scale (DRS). In terms of productivity, a bifurcated growth pattern was identified, with commercial banks increasing productivity through technological innovation, whereas some regional banks did so by improving internal efficiency. This study is significant in that it suggests the Korean banking industry is structurally bifurcating based on technology and scale, raising the need for differentiated strategies for each banking group.
