국문 초록

ESG의 중요성이 지속적으로 높아짐에 따라 다양한 연구가 발표되고 있으나, ESG 요소를 종합적으로 고려하는 동시에 직관적으로 이해할 수 있는 방법론을 제시한 선행연구는 찾아보기 어려운 실정이다. 이에 본 연구는 ESG 실증분석에 생물학 원리인 “최소량의 법칙”을 적용하여, 기존 연구의 한계를 극복하고 차별화된 시사점을 도출한다. 본 연구는 한국ESG기준원의 데이터를 활용하여, ESG 영역 중 가장 낮은 등급이 기업의 재무성과에 미치는 영향을 실증하고 시사점을 도출한다. 연구대상은 한국ESG기준원의 데이터가 있는 코스피 상장기업으로 하고, 연구기간은 2016년부터 2024년까지로 한다. 본 연구는 실증분석을 통해, ESG 최저등급과 최고등급의 격차가 확대되고 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 패널회귀분석을 통해 ESG 영역 중 가장 낮은 등급이 ROE와 주가변동률에 보다 유의한 영향을 미치는 것을 확인하였다. ESG 경영에 최소량의 법칙 적용이 가능함을 확인한 만큼, ESG는 기업의 약점과 위험 감소에 유용성이 높은 경영전략임을 제언한다. 본 연구는 ESG 경영에 최소량 법칙의 적용 가능성을 최초로 실증한 연구로, 본 연구의 시사점을 바탕으로 보다 정확하고 직관적으로 이해 가능한 ESG 연구가 활발히 전개되길 기대한다.

영문 초록

As the importance of ESG grows, various studies are being published. However, accurate and easily understandable ESG study is lacking. Therefore, this study applies the biological principle known as the “Law of the Minimum” to empirical ESG analysis to overcome the limitations of prior study and derive differentiated implications. Using data from the KCGS(Korea Institute of Corporate Governance and Sustainability), this study empirically analyzes the impact of minimum ESG ratings on corporate financial performance and derives implications. The study subjects are KOSPI-listed companies, and the research period is from 2016 to 2024. The empirical analysis results confirm a widening gap between the lowest and highest ESG ratings, and panel regression analysis results confirmed that the lowest ESG rating had more significant impact on ROE and stock price volatility. This study confirmed that the Law of the Minimum can be applied to ESG, and suggests that ESG is a highly useful management strategy for reducing corporate weaknesses and risks. Based on the implications of this study, more accurate, intuitive, and easily understandable ESG study should be conducted.
