트로트라는 텍스트, ‘임영웅’이라는 장르 : 레퍼토리, 창법, 연행을 중심으로

국문 초록

임영웅 등장 이후 세대와 취향을 넘는 국민적 인기에 힘입은 트로트의 귀환은 21세기 트로트 이해를 위한 다각적 탐구를 요청한다. 이 연구는 그간 장르트로트의 정체성 규명의 시도가 대부분 음악적 텍스트의 외부에서 이루어졌다는 졌다는 점과 동시에 임영웅의 트로트가 장르의 관습적 레퍼토리, 창법, 연행에서 빗겨나 있다는 점에 주목해, 임영웅의 신드롬적 인기와 당대 트로트를이해하는 방편으로, 임영웅의 음악적 텍스트 읽기를 시도하고자 한다. 트로트를 규정하는 음악적 특징은 장르 초기부터 지속적으로 변모해 왔다(박애경, 2022). 트로트 규정에 있어 선법, 리듬, 창법 등 음악적 텍스트는매우 중요함에도 불구하고 이에 대한 탐구는 트로트의 사적, 사회·문화적 연구에 비해 소홀했다. 그런데 임영웅이 트로트를 넘어 한국 대중문화의 정점에오른 데는 여타 트로트 가수로부터 구별시킨 그 만의 음악적 텍스트가 주요했다는 점을 상기할 필요가 있다. 따라서 이 연구는 그의 음악적 텍스트 중 레퍼토리와 창법을 중심으로, 어떻게 관습적 장르 텍스트와 같거나 다른지를 살피고 또한 그의 음악적 텍스트가 트로트 공연 연행의 가시적 변화-장윤정으로표상되던 ‘행사’에서 임영웅으로 표상되는 ‘콘서트’로-를 트로트 장의 연행의중심으로 이끌어내는데 일조할 수 있었는지를 구명해 보고자 한다. 궁극적으로 이 연구는 음악적 텍스트 분석을 통해 임영웅 신드롬의 구체적 근거를 추론하고 현 단계 트로트를 표상하는 임영웅을 통해 트로트의 장르적 정체성을재점검하는 한국대중음악의 논의에 참여하고자 한다.

영문 초록

The return of trot, buoyed by the nationwide popularity of Lim Young -woong that transcends generations and personal tastes, calls for a multifaceted exploration of trot in the 21st century. This study begins with two key observations: first, that previous attempts to define the identity of trot as a genre have predominantly taken place outside the realm of musical texts; and second, that Lim Young-woong's approach to trot significantly deviates from the genre’s conventional repertoire, vocal techniques, and modes of performance. In response, this paper seeks to analyze Lim’s musical texts as a means of understanding both his extraordinary popularity and the current state of the trot genre. The musical characteristics that define trot have continually evolved since the genre’s inception (Park Aekyung, 2022). While elements such as modes, rhythm, and vocal style are essential to the genre’s definition, scholarly attention has disproportionately focused on historical, social, and cultural dimensions, often neglecting musical textual analysis. It is important to recall, however, that Lim Young-woong’s rise to the pinnacle of Korean popular culture-beyond the domain of trot-was largely enabled by his distinctive musical texts, which set him apart from other trot singers. Accordingly, this study closely examines Lim’s repertoire and vocal style to identify how they align with or diverge from conventional genre norms. Furthermore, it explores how his musical texts have contributed to the transformation of trot performance-from the “event-based” model, represented by artists like Jang Yoon-jeong, to the “concert-based” model now symbolized by Lim Young-woong. Ultimately, by analyzing Lim’s musical texts, this paper aims to uncover concrete foundations for the “Lim Young-woong phenomenon” and contribute to broader discussions in Korean popular music studies concerning genre identity, using Lim as a lens through which to reassess contemporary trot.
