Purpose: The decline in respiratory function among older adults can limit their daily activities and mobility. Therefore, simple and practical screening tools are needed for the early identification of respiratory impairment. The present study aimed to examine the association between three types of sit-to-stand tests (STSTs) and respiratory function in community-dwelling older women.
Methods: Sixty-eight women aged 65 years and older were recruited from the community. Their respiratory function was assessed using forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP). The participants performed the five-time STST, 30-s STST, and 1-min STST in randomized order. Pearson correlation analyses were performed to examine associations between STST performance and respiratory indicators.
Results: All types of STST showed moderate and statistically significant correlations with respiratory muscle strength, including MIP and MEP. The FVC% and FEV₁% showed significant correlations with 1-min STST only (p<.05).
Conclusion: The 1-min STST showed moderate associations with respiratory muscle strength and weak but significant associations with ventilatory function, suggesting its utility in assessing respiratory performance. The 30-s STST may serve as a practical alternative for older adults with limited exercise capacity.
