디지털 시대 레트로 문화에서 “노스탤지어적 미디어 이용”의 개념화 고찰: 재매개(remediation)의 변용을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 90년대 이후 레트로, 2010년대 중후반의 뉴트로, 최근 새로 등장한 영트로에 이르기까지 세대를 아우르는 전지구적 문화 현상이자 디지털 미디어 기술이 매개하는 문화 현상으로서, 이러한 포괄적인 레트로 문화 현상이 현시점에서 지니는 사회문화적 함의를 알아보고, 특히 디지털 미디어 기술의 발전과 맞물려 변용되는 실천적 현실에 대한 관찰을 통한 개념화 논의를 살펴보고자 한다. 과거의 대중문화가 디지털 콘텐츠로 재매개된 후 수용자에 의해 다양한 방식으로 선별, 편집, 재생산, 공유되며 각자의 삶 안에서 향유되는 문화 현상을 “노스탤지어적 미디어 이용”으로 개념화하고, 이에 대한 보다 체계적이고 학술적인 분석을 도모할 수 있도록 “재매개” 논의를 변용하여, “재현적 노스탤지어 미디어이용”과 “(재)매개적 노스탤지어 미디어 이용”으로 구분할 필요성을 제기했다. 아울러, 재현적 노스탤지어 미디어 이용은, 1) 시대적 재현, 2) 고전적 재현, 3) 회귀적 재현을 포괄하는 현상이며 (재)매개적 노스탤지어 미디어 이용은, 1) 콘텐츠 재매개, 2) 기술적 재매개, 3) 상호작용적 재매개를 포괄하는 것으로 정의했다. 이러한 시도가 레트로 현상에 대한 미디어 이용의 영향을 탐구하는 데 갖는 이론적 함의를 논했다.

영문 초록

This study explores the phenomenon of comprehensive retro culture, encompassing the retro trends of the 1990s, the newtro movement of the mid-to-late 2010s, and the recent emergence of “young-tro.” Positioned as a global cultural trend that spans generations, this phenomenon is also closely tied to the evolution of digital media technologies. The research aims to investigate the sociocultural significance of this retro culture in the current era, particularly focusing on how it is transformed through digital mediation. The study conceptualizes the way in which past popular culture is remediated into digital content and actively selected, edited, reproduced, and shared by users as a form of nostalgic media use. To provide a more systematic and academic analysis, this research applies the theoretical framework of re『mediation and proposes a distinction between two types of nostalgic media use: representational nostalgic media use and (re)mediated nostalgic media use. Representational nostalgic media use includes historical, classical, and regressive representations, while (re)mediated nostalgic media use involves contents, technical, and interactive remediation. This typological framework offers a conceptual basis for future theoretical discussions and contributes to the understanding of nostalgia-driven media practices in contemporary digital culture.
