국문 초록

이 글은 거제 포로수용소 유적공원에 세워진 김백일 동상의 철거 논쟁의 전개 과정과 갈등 요인을 분석하고, 이 사건이 지닌 역사교육적 함의를 탐색하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 김백일은 일제강점기 간도특설대 장교로 활동한 반민족행위자였으며, 한국전쟁기에 군사적 영웅으로 추앙된 인물이다. 그의 동상 건립과 단죄비 설치는 상반된 기억이 충돌하고 갈등하는 상징적인 장면이다. 동상 건립을 주도한 흥남철수기념사업회는 보은(報恩)을 전면에 내세워 김백일을 기념하고자 했고, 이에 맞서 단죄비를 세운 거제 지역 시민사회 세력은 그의 친일 행적을 문제 삼았다. 동상과 단죄비를 둘러싼의 갈등은 장소(거제 포로수용소 유적공원), 지역(거제), 시간(3･1운동 100주년)이라는 세 가지 요인을 중심으로 더욱 심화되었다. 본 연구는 동상 철거 논쟁을 ‘경합하는 기억’과 ‘기억의 얽힘’이란 개념을 중심으로, 역사교육적 맥락에서 접근하고자 했다. 단순한 공과론이나 ‘반공 대 친일’의 이분법적 프레임을 넘어 식민, 분단, 냉전, 민주화, 지역 정체성 등 다양한 기억의 층위들이 교차하고 중첩되며 복합적 의미를 생성하는 특성에 주목하며, 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 역사교육적 함의를 도출하였다.

영문 초록

This study examines the development and conflict surrounding the removal of the Kim Baek-il statue at the Geoje Prisoner of War (POW) Camp Historical Park. It aims to analyze the factors behind the controversy and explore its implications for history education. Kim Baek-il was a collaborator during the Japanese colonial period, having served as an officer in the Gando Special Force. However, he was later revered as a military hero during the Korean War. These conflicting evaluations are manifested in the construction of his statue and the subsequent installation of a denunciation monument, revealing competing memories. The statue was erected by the Heungnam Evacuation Memorial Committee, which framed Kim within a narrative of national gratitude. In contrast, local civic groups in Geoje criticized his pro-Japanese activities and erected a monument condemning his past. The coexistence of these two monuments in a single space sparked significant social conflict. This tension was further intensified by three main factors: the location (a site symbolic of war and division), the regional context of Geoje, and the timing, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement. This study approaches the statue controversy through the lens of “contested memory” and “entangled of memory,” reframing the issue within the context of history education. It moves beyond dichotomous frameworks such as heroism versus betrayal or anti-communism versus pro-Japanese collaboration, and instead focuses on the multiple layers of memory—colonialism, national division, the Cold War, democratization, and regional identity. These layers intersect and overlap, producing complex and evolving meanings. Based on this analysis, the study seeks to draw implications for how history education can critically engage with the politics of memory in contemporary society.
