본 연구는 『대학(大學)』의 핵심 개념인 ‘서(恕)’를 중심으로, 다산 정약용의 『대학공의(大學公議, 1814)』와 제임스 레게( James Legge), 제임스 게일( James S. Gale)의 『대학』 영어 번역을 비교·분석한 것이다. 『대학』의 ‘혈구지도(絜矩之道)’는 자신을 기준으로 타인을 헤아리는 윤리 원리를 제시하며, 『논어』의 “기소불욕 물시어인(己所不欲 勿施於人)”과 맥락을 같이한다. 다산은 이를 ‘서’로 규정하고 인간 상호 간의 감정 이입과 이해를 중시하는 실천적 윤리로 해석하여, 주자학적 형식 윤리를 넘어선 ‘공감(共感, empathy)’의 윤리관을 제시하였다. 제임스 레게는 The Great Learning (1861)에서 ‘서’를 ‘reciprocity’로 번역하여 상호성의 도덕 법칙으로 이해하였고, 제임스 게일은 『선영대조대학(鮮英對照大學)』(1924)에서 ‘서’를 ‘pardon’으로 옮겨 기독교적 용서와 자비의 정서로 풀이하였다. 이 비교를 통해 ‘서’는 단순한 유교의 덕목이 아니라, 시대와 문화적 배경에 따라 ‘공감-호혜성-용서’로 확장될 수 있는 보편적 인간 이해의 원리임을 밝혔다.

영문 초록

This study examines the core concept of Seo (恕) in The Great Learning (大學), focusing on a comparative analysis of Jeong Yak-yong’s Daehakgongui (大學公議, 1814) and the English translations of The Great Learning by James Legge and James S. Gale. The passage “the Way of measuring by the square” (絜矩之道) in The Great Learning presents an ethical principle of judging others by oneself, echoing the Analects’ maxim “What you do not desire for yourself, do not do to others.” Jeong interpreted this as Seo, a practical ethic emphasizing empathy and sympathetic understanding, thereby proposing an ethics of empathy (共感) that transcends the formal moralism of Neo-Confucian orthodoxy. James Legge, in The Great Learning (1861), rendered Seo as reciprocity, viewing it as the moral law of mutuality; James S. Gale, in The Korean-English Great Learning (1924), translated it as pardon, interpreting it in terms of Christian compassion and forgiveness. Through this comparison, the study reveals that Seo is not a mere Confucian virtue but a universal moral principle that can expand, across cultures and eras, into the ethics of empathy, reciprocity, and pardon.
