국문 초록

본 연구는 사회 구성원 간의 상호 신뢰의 근거를 설명하는 홉스와 롤즈의 입장을 비교하고, 입헌적 민주주의 사회에서 롤즈의 입장이 선점하는 상대적 이점을 확인하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 다음의 세 가지 과정을 거친다. 첫째, 상호 신뢰의 관계를 구성하는요건이 무엇인지를 살펴본다. 상호 신뢰의 관계는 상호 신뢰의 주체, 신뢰의 대상들 간의 상호 동일성, 그리고 공유된 상호 신뢰의 내용이 있어야 한다는 것이 그 요건이다. 둘째, 홉스와 로크의 정치철학이 전제하는 상호 신뢰의 요건이 무엇인지 살펴본다. 홉스는 상호신뢰의 주체, 그리고 신뢰의 대상들의 상호 동일성을 사회계약론이 전제하는 추상적인 계약의 당사자로 치환한다. 그리고 사회계약 당사자 모두가 계약의 결론인 절대권력에 대한 공포의 감정을 공유한다는 일종의 신뢰를 상호 신뢰의 공통의 내용으로 삼는다. 롤즈 또한, 홉스와 마찬가지로 추상적인 계약의 당사자 사이에 신뢰의 공통된 내용이 공유되어야 한다고 본다. 상호 신뢰의 근거를 설명하는 이론은 이를 위해 본 연구는 다음의 순서로 진행된다. 첫째, 사회 구성원이 서로를 신뢰한다는 것의 형식적인 특징이 무엇인지를 제시한다. 둘째, 이러한 형식적인 특징들을 홉스와 롤즈의 정치철학이 어떠한 방식으로 충족하는지를 설명한다. 마지막으로, 사회 구성원 간의 상호 신뢰에 대한 롤즈의 해석이 홉스에 비해 가지는 상대적 이점이 무엇인지를 설명한다.

영문 초록

This study aims to compare the positions of Hobbes and Rawls in explaining the basis of mutual trust among members of society, and to identify the relative advantages that Rawls’s position holds in a constitutional democratic society. To achieve this, the study proceeds through the following three stages. First, it examines the requirements that constitute a relationship of mutual trust. These requirements include the subjects of mutual trust, the mutual identity among the objects of trust, and the shared content of mutual trust. Second, it examines the requirements of mutual trust presupposed by the political philosophies of Hobbes and Locke. Hobbes replaces the subjects of mutual trust and the mutual identity of the objects of trust with the abstract parties to the contract presupposed by social contract theory. He then establishes as the common content of mutual trust a kind of faith that all parties to the social contract share the emotion of fear toward absolute power, which is the conclusion of the contract. Rawls, like Hobbes, also believes that the common content of trust must be shared among the abstract parties to the contract. The theory explaining the basis of mutual trust proceeds in the following order. First, it presents the formal characteristics of what it means for members of society to trust one another. Second, it explains how the political philosophies of Hobbes and Rawls satisfy these formal characteristics. Finally, it explains the relative advantages that Rawls’s interpretation of mutual trust among members of society has compared to Hobbes.
