가야금병창 연구의 구조적 편향과 학문적 과제

국문 초록

본 연구는 가야금병창 연구의 축적 과정에서 나타난 연구 대상 및 접근 범위의 편향을 규명하고, 이를 바탕으로 향후 연구 과제를 제시하는 데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 가야금병창을 주제로 한 석·박사 학위논문과 주요 학술지 연구를 연대별·인물별·기관별로 비교 분석하였다. 그 결과, 연구는 소수 명창과 판소리 대목 중심으로 특정 레퍼토리에 집중되는 경향을 보였으며, 반대로 민요병창·창작병창·비전승 병창곡 등은 연구 공백 영역으로 확인되었다. 이와 같은 편향은 대학 전승 체계, 자료 접근성, 실연 가능 범위, 학술지 담론 구조 등 학문 생산 환경이 연구 주제를 구조적으로 조건화한 결과로 해석된다. 본 연구는 가야금병창 연구가 전승의 다양성과 실연 기반의 학술적 해석으로 확장될 필요가 있음을 제언하며, 장르를 동시대적으로 재구성되는 지식 생산의 장으로 이해하는 새로운 관점을 제시한다.

영문 초록

This study aims to identify the structural bias embedded in the academic production of research on Gayageum byeongchang and to propose directions for future scholarship. To this end, master’s and doctoral theses and journal articles related to Gayageum byeongchang were examined through comparative analysis by period, performer lineage, and institutional research context. The analysis reveals that previous studies have predominantly focused on a limited group of master performers and specific pansori passages, resulting in a concentration of research on particular repertoires, while minyo-based byeongchang, newly created works, and regionally transmitted pieces remain markedly under-studied. Such bias is not merely a matter of individual research preference, but is shaped by structural factors, including university-based transmission systems, unequal access to performance and archival materials, and the discursive mechanisms of academic validation. This study suggests that future research should expand toward diverse regional transmission practices and performer subjectivities, undertake the documentation and analysis of under-researched repertoires, and adopt performance-based methodologies that account for vocal technique, stage practice, and pedagogical processes. By repositioning Gayageum byeongchang as a dynamic site of knowledge production where vocality, instrumental performance, narrative, and corporeal practice intersect, this study provides a renewed framework for understanding the genre’s contemporary scholarly significance.
