국문 초록

본 연구는 사우디아라비아 중부 알-까심(Al-Qassim) 지역의 상인 집단인 알-오낄라트(al-ʿUqaylāt)가 남긴 역사와 집단기억이 박물관 전시 내러티브 속에서 어떻게 재구성되는지를 분석하였다. 이를 위해 모리스 알박스(Maurice Halbwachs), 피에르 노라(Pierre Nora), 얀 아스만(Jan Assmann)의 집단기억 이론을 적용하여, 박물관이 과거를 현재와 연결하고 세대 간 기억을 제도화하는 과정을 규명하였다. 알-오낄라트 박물관은 상인들의 국제 교류와 사회적 기여를 전시를 통해 제시함으로써 지역의 역사와 정체성을 국가 문화유산과 긴밀히 연결하고 있다. 본 연구는 국가 중심의 역사 서술에서 간과되어 온 지역 상인들의 경험을 조명하고, 박물관이 지역과 국가의 정체성이 상호 작용하는 공간으로 기능함을 밝힘으로써, 사우디아라비아의 역사와 문화유산을 새롭게 이해하는 데 기여한다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes how the history and collective memory of al-ʿUqaylāt (a merchant group) from the Al-Qassim region in central Saudi Arabia are reconstructed within the narrative of a museum exhibition. With a theoretical framework of collective memory developed by Maurice Halbwachs, Pierre Nora, and Jan Assmann, this study examines how the museum connects the past with the present and institutionalizes memory across generations. The al-ʿUqaylāt Museum presents the merchants’ international exchanges and social contributions as exhibitions that closely link the region’s history and identity with the national cultural heritage. By highlighting the experiences of regional merchants that are often overlooked in state-centered historiography, this study demonstrates that the museum serves as a space where regional and national identities interact, thereby contributing to a new understanding of Saudi Arabia’s history and cultural heritage.
