본 논문은 미국 스탠드업 코미디언 맷 라이프(Matt Rife)의 공연을 분석 대상으로 삼아, 현대 유머에 내재한 정치성, 감정 역학, 그리고 수용자 반응의 양가적 구조를 고찰한다. 라이프는 인종, 젠더, 외모, 장애 등 사회적으로 민감한 주제를 거리낌 없이 농담의 소재로 활용하며, 관객에게 웃음과 불편함을 동시에 유발하는 독특한 코미디 전략을 구사한다. 그의 유머는 정치적 올바름(political correctness), 캔슬 컬처(cancel culture), 표현 규범과 같은 현대 담론에 대한 풍자이자 저항의 목소리로 기능하는 한편, 반복적으로 사회적 약자를 웃음의 대상으로 삼는 ‘펀치 다운’ 방식으로 작동함으로써, 차별적 구조를 재생산한다는 비판도 함께 제기된다. 본 논문은 이러한 이중적 효과에 주목하며, 유머가 해방적 감정의 출구이자, 위계적 질서를 은연중에 강화하는 매개가 될 수 있다는 점을 분석한다. 특히 ‘웃음’이라는 정동(affect)의 흐름이 어떻게 사회적 공감과 피로, 저항과 배제를 매개하며, 코미디가 단순한 오락을 넘어 사회적 긴장과 감정 정치의 무대로 기능하고 있는지를 탐구한다. 이를 통해 유머가 현대 사회의 규범, 권력, 금기, 감정 구조와 어떤 방식으로 교차하고 있는지를 비판적으로 조명한다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the stand-up comedy of American comedian Matt Rife to explore the political and affective dimensions of contemporary humor. Rife frequently uses socially sensitive topics—such as race, gender, body image, and disability—as material for his jokes, eliciting both discomfort and laughter from audiences. His performances challenge the boundaries of political correctness and moral regulation, positioning humor as a tool for both critique and catharsis. However, his comedy also raises concerns about the reproduction of social hierarchies and the ethics of punching down. The paper argues that humor functions as a double-edged mechanism: it can disrupt dominant norms and offer emotional release, but it can also reinforce stereotypes and exclusionary dynamics. Particular attention is given to the affective responses generated in live performances and online fan communities, where laughter becomes a site of emotional resonance, complicity, or resistance. Through Rife’s case, the study shows how humor today operates as a cultural practice where taboos, freedom of expression, and moral fatigue intersect. Ultimately, the paper highlights how humor reflects and mediates broader tensions in contemporary society—between speech and censorship, empathy and ridicule, liberation and harm.
